Heat issue
« on: July 04, 2013, 10:20:16 AM »
I'm running a Scorpion HK 4025-630 on 12s (12t pinion) in my E5S ... the motor gets very VERY hot (can't hold my finger on it at all) I have it set for 5degrees of timming and 8PWM rate ... any suggestions? Would setting it as outrunner reduce the heat?

What pinion and what head speed are you running?  630Kv is on the high end.  According to the MrMel calculator, using the 12T pinion on 12S with 630Kv, 2,387rpm would be on the low end of head speed.  As the head speed goes lower, the motor gets hotter.

Setting the ESC to "outrunner" is suboptimal for helicopters.

Mike,
Those setting should be fine.  Have you actually checked the temp? Normal temps will typically be in the 160 range in the summer depending on the ambient.  Maybe a bit higher or lower depending on how you fly also.
My scorpions are always pretty hot when the come down but run fine.  Compared to say an Align motor they do run hot.  They are also much more powerful!  They also are build to handle the heat.
What ESC?  If it's Castle look at your logs and see what kind of amp draw you are running?
That setup should be fine though. It is what I run.

Cheers

Correcting myself on one thing.  I run the 550KV version.  I have a 650 but I used that when I was playing with a 10S version.

try 18 deg timing, and measure temp
with a temp gun, 160 is quite normal.

That is the bad thing about the summer, the motor feels hotter than usual.  It was great in the winter time because the motor would cool down fast.  I flew 3 packs back to back without any issues or performance declines.

Thanks for the reply guys ... I took the heli out for a few flights to log some data and actual temps to post back to you and the helicopter went down! One of the  m3x25 shouldered bolt and nyloc nut come apart on the main gear while I was inverted ... the Heli is a F'n mess ... I'm going to offer it to my son if he wants to repair it .. if not then I'll part it out! Cheers and thanks again for your inputs!
