Threaded Rods.... OUCH!
« on: October 05, 2011, 07:18:01 AM »
Hello all... and Matt!

First off, I 'd like to state, so far this heli has been a very nice build...  Things go together well.  All the parts are of good quality, overall it's a nice heli....

With that being said.... Please, for the love of all things good, find another (or Fix) supplier for threaded rods.  I almost had my heli finished, but my fingers hurt too bad...

The threads on the rods are terrible, the absolute worst I've ever seen.  It would appear they are pressed on, rather than machined... (I don't know much about the manufacturing process, so I'm just guessing)  The threads are not very deep, they don't grab well, when starting out.... Basically, I hate 'em.  To get them to thread on, I have to push the rod and the ball together with quite a bit of force, and try to turn them at the same time....  Every once in awhile, I get a side of a link which threads on fine.... I even tried using it for the other links...  I threaded them on the good link, then went back to the "bad" link, hoping it would just thread on.... no joy....

It's just something I wanted to make you aware of...  I'm already past the point possibly buying new links....  Just going to pull out my "mechanics gloves" today, and hope to get the pitch rods done, which is all I have left to build.....

Please, oh please, consider some sort of fix....  Maybe if I even knew the size of the rods, I might look for a "die" to help cut the threads...  But, in my oh so humble opinion, I really think you need to fix this....  Or, at least tell me what the secret is for threading them on, without tearing up my fingers....  (I have built, many, many helis, and these are just terrible...)

I hate to even mention one negative thing, it has always been my least favorite part of building, which is why I own the link maker 9000, but the links don't fit....  Neither do any of my ball link holder, thread on, thingys....

Thanks,
Joe_Breezy

You are right putting on links using only you fingers is painfull. Many years ago I bought a link installing tool, it an alu  think specially made to help with this aspect of our hobby, therefore I was able to do all mine painlessly and all in the same evening. You should consider getting some of these...
What I have looks like this:  http://www.experiencerc.com/store/cn2219a_ball_link_easy_driver-p-8991.html

Dont know if he changed the links on the E7 but the one on the N5 are great very tight and long lasting a very small amount of grease on the threads worked great for threading them thay are hard to start but worth it in the long fun the rod is bigger and the plastic is harder so they last longer IMO

Hello breezyjr,

Sorry for the troubles with the links.

This is a known issue with a few of the kits in the first batch that has been fixed.

All future kits have to correct link rods.

If you have a 2.5mm die these links are very easy to fix. If not, send me a PM.

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks for the size Matt....

If I get a chance, and still need it, I'll go pick a die up today....  right now, like I said, all I need are the last two links for blade pitch....

For those above, I have ball link tools, but not ones that fit the larger Synergy Ball links....  When I do have a set that fit, I always start them with my fingers...  As Matt states, there was a problem with some of the early kits, and getting them started was very, very difficult.  This is where I hurt my fingers... once I got it started, I'd just use a long screw, or screw driver to put through the ball hole, and turn it that way....  It was all in the getting started....

Still an awesome heli Matt....  Don't think it changes my mind about the overall heli... (or company, or even designer.... <grin>)   :P

take care all....

Just so ya know.... I managed to get mine put together with the help of Align...  Think they were some pitch links for my t600 I did use.... were only approx 2mm shorter than the synergy links...  Unfortunately, the local hardware store didn't have a 2.5mm die....

But, I'm happy with the finished result... will maiden tomorrow....

Here's what I happen to be running....

HeliJive 120 (with the new FW, but not using external governor, so not worried about it working with Vbar)
Pyro 700-45L long shaft
BLS 255 HV cyclic
BLS 256 HV tail
CC BEC Pro @8v (running off 6s series adapter I made myself)
Skookum 720 FW 3.1 (I think)

Choice of two battery packs... TP 3800 45c 6s packs (x2) or TP 4400 45c 6s packs (x2)

95mm V blade tails...
600mm Maverick G5 wide chord FBL blades...

Can't wait till tomorrow...  Supposed to be a nice day here in Michigan...  And, the kids will all be in school...  (yippee!)

Thanks again for the awesome heli kit Matt... Once I pick up some RC Booya quick release canopy standoffs, I'll be all set, for right now, stock is fine!

Have fun flying everyone!

Did you use the links from a trex? They are only 2mm so be careful they don't pull out

I did use links I found with my trex 600, but measured them, and they were the same size.....  They were at the bottom of a spare parts bag that came with the (used) heli....  So, they actually could be for something else.....

Anybody know where I can get a M2.5 x .45 die?  None of the local hardware or hobby stores have anything that small (M3 is the smallest).

Alternatively, how would I go about contacting Mr. Botos directly to get a replacement set sent out?
