white spot in main gear
« on: January 24, 2014, 05:51:26 PM »
I was continuing my E7SE build today when I noticed there was a white spot in my main gear.  I can feel it very slightly with my finger nail, but it's not too bad.  Also like I can tell it's a different material, feel.  Should I use this or get a new one?

Here's some pics, they are large in size, so I'll add some links to view them in another page:

Fixed the pic links.  They are big and very wide pics and didn't look good on this sites fixed width, so I hosted them another place.  That should work.  :)

That's pretty crazy. Black and white are both pretty much standard colors for Delrin.  Looks like maybe one white pellet got mixed in when they manufactured that sheet but that's just a guess.

Looks like the host is having some issues.  I will look into it more.  Maybe they are just doing some maintenance.

Looks like the plastic was contaminated in the extrusion proses. If you can feel the lip with your nail, it might leave a wear mark on the pinion when running.

I would see if it would flake off if you lightly tried to scrape it with an exacto knife. Use caution, and if you don't feel comfortable than don't do it.

There's no scraping this off.  It's hard to tell from the pics, but it's not like it's stuck on there, it's more something was in there when it was made, and then machined into.  If it did some how fall out, there'd be a big void that, and I definitely wouldn't use it then.

When they extrude Delrin (acetal), it starts out as pellets which get melted and extruded or injection molded depending on the application.  It looked to me like it was one homologous piece of plastic, just that it had one white pellet that got thrown in the mix.

Sounds like Rodney's explanation makes sense.  Either way if it is only a spot in the delrin you should be fine.

This gear is okay to run. This is just a color flaw when the material is initially formed into a cylindrical shape.

If the white spot bothers you please feel free to send it back and I will trade it out for you.

Thanks!

Matt
