E5 build question
« on: September 07, 2014, 09:23:31 PM »
The head on my new E5 came assembled and the spindle shaft bolts are so tight I can't remove them. Does this mean the head is ready to use with proper lubrication? Typically I disassemble the head to grease the bearings.
Thanks

A little heat helps. You definitely want to disassemble and grease, loctite, and reassemble.

You need to dissemble the head to lubricate the bearings and Loctite it back together.

Heat did not work for me, not even using a torch and getting the screws red hot.  What ended up working for me where T-handle 4mm Allen wrenches.  I got the KleinTools from Amazon.

To me, that was the toughest part of the build on the E5's and the E7SE.  Before I purchased the T-handle 4mm Allen wrenches, I hurt the palms of my hands trying to get those screws out.  Once I purchased the T-handle 4mm Allen wrenches, the first screw came out pretty easily.  However, I needed the Grippy to help me get the other screw out.

Hi drav8r,

The head does require disassembly as no loctite or lubrication has been used during it's pre-assembly at the factory.

The best tools i have found for this job are a pair of 4mm T-Bar allen key wrenches and a 8mm spindle tool.

The T Bar Allen Key 4mm Wrenches can be found at most good tool suppliers.

The spindle tools can be found at most helicopter specialists.

Use the 4mm T-Bar wrenches to loosen the head bolts, usually one will let go first. Once you have one side loose, just remove the bolt and blade grip assembly and using the spindle wrench to hold the spindle the bolt on the  opposing side can now be undone.

Once you have this done, the head can be disassembled and everything cleaned and properly lubricated then rebuilt using loctite where needed.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Ross
