Fuel tank stopper gromet.
« on: January 27, 2017, 06:45:40 AM »
How are we getting the Fuel tank stopper gromet in and out of the fuel tank?
This thing is  tighter than Oj's gloves !
What is your  favorite tool for installing one of these things?
Is it worth the time it takes to pull the fuel tank ?
Pull the stopper first, then the gromet, then the reverse for install?

Ok got it out. Destroyed the gromet and few scratches on the fitting which i can buff out. The plan was to replace the gromet but I'd like to save the fitting next time as well.

Hi Pilot error,

I've done the same but a method i use now and i find it quite effective is to get a 1.5mm or 2mm hex driver and using the plain shank of the driver and roll it under the lip of the stopper so it doesn't damage the stopper. Using the driver to pull the stopper out slowly, you can switch sides if needed as this can help the stopper come out, this should allow you to remove the stopper and the grommet without damaging either the stopper or the grommet.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Ross

I just bought my kit. I fuel stopper seems to be too big for the hole in the fuel tank.I do not know how can I get it in. Do I need to use lubricant? Or we need to use exacto Knife to make the hole bigger.

Should not require any modification. Just install the grommet first then push the stopper through.

I do exact same thing that Daniel just said. Using a hex driver to remove the stopper . Works every time.

Thanks for the tips. I pushed the grommet using a 2.5mm flat tipped rod I have and it worked great. Do we need to glue the tank edge grommet to the framer before sliding the fuel tank inside?

Cool D,

I have glued mine in but will honestly say, after building over 20+ N5's and N5c's I haven't clued mine in years.. You want to make sure when you install it, make sure you spread the grommet out, meaning don't pull it tight around the corners, this will have the tendency to have the edge raise up. Remember you get one shot before you trim any off. Going back to the glue, I never liked seeing the residue around the frame. Gotta be carful if you choose to glue it in.. Good luck brother, you will love this machine!!
