CC ICE2 120, Hacker A50-12L combo
« on: May 02, 2012, 01:11:59 AM »
I think this combo is choice of the E7 power.
But my motor is running too hot. It is too hot to get my finger on the motor for 2 seconds. :'(
My motor setting on the CC is follows:
Start Power:59
Timing:5
PWM:12Khz
HS:2100
Gov gain:10
And I have V4.01

Any suggestion?

Thanks.

Hi,

The Hacker Turnado is an excellent motor, i run the 580Kv version in my E6 and i intend on running 470Kv verison in my new E7. Very smooth and powerful motors.

Couple of things to check and try:
Try Matt's Config file for the 470Kv Hacker motor: http://synergyrchelicopters.com/forum/index.php?topic=46.0

Also, check the pinion and make sure it is positioned so that it sits flush with the lower bearing in the lower bearing support plate, if it is not this could be causing excess heat to build up in the motor.

Hope this helps and if you have any other questions just give me a shout!  :)
Cheers!
Ross

Try PWM 8 and timing 0. Zero timing with Castle just means normal timing.

What pinion?  Mine runs very hot as well, going to gear down from 14T to 13T.

Thank you gentlemen,

Ross,
My pinion is set correctly. The Matt's setup file isn't V4.01 or is it? I will try it anyway and let you know.

Stevenhof,
I don't remember where I read but the timing for this motor is 15. Is timing effects the performance of motor? And what the heck is PWM? I notice there is a "outrunner" set at pulldown on PWM setting. Should I use this?

Darren,
Mine is 14T. I don't think I can get 2100HS if I go lower on pinion with this motor.

Matt's listed ESC setup is probably not 4.01. the only things that might change are gov gain and motor start power. Your gov gain of 10 should be fine. I'm using 12 with my Hacker 470 but I'd guess anywhere from 8 to 14 would be OK with 4.01. If you get it too high you may hear some surging or see the tail get a bit jerky from tying to keep up while the esc is over working the motor rpm range to try to keep it constant.

My motor starts fine at norm or 59. If you hear high pitched chirping and or the motor starts in a jerky fashion, raise the motor start power until you get a smooth start up in slow start.

14T pinion is the right one for 2100 rpm. I'm not an expert with the motor/ESC configurations. However, PWM is pulse width modulation. IIRC it controls how long the pulse duration is for each poll of the motor. Higher numbers generally gain a little more power at the expense of creating a little more heat. There is a formula for determining PWM. Sorry, don't have it handy. However, I do remember seeing that the Hacker should be around PWM 9 so 8 is probably fine and 12 might be just a tad to much.

I've asked Castle to correlate their motor timing numbers in degrees. All I got was something to the effect that the ESC automatically picks an optimal timing when you set the esc timing number to zero. Anything above that is considered an advanced timing and should generate a bit more power at the expense of a little more heat. Hope this helps....

I always ran normal timing and 8 pwm with the Hacker 470kv motor. I also governed at 2150.

We really need to know actual temperatures before determining if the motor is too hot. These motors can handle temps between 160-180 degrees which can feel very hot to touch. Get yourself a cheap temp gun and let us know the actual numbers.

Thanks,

Matt

Thank you Stevehof and Matt,

I will try those numbers and let you guys know.

Matt, I always wanted to get that IR thermometer. I will get that soon.

Again, thanks guys.

After flying my E7 at 1950 with a 12T pinion today, I see no benefit from taller gearing and higher headspeeds.  The machine flys really well at this headspeed!

I'm getting 5 mins of fairly aggressive flying with 4000mAh packs.  My motor comes down around 130F with ambient temp 80F.
