N5C starter shaft one way bearing.

Has anyone had a problem with the start shaft one way bearing failing? I am currently on my third one in about 20 flights. I have lube it with oil and grease with the same out come. Each time the roller retaining plastic is broken. I am aligning everything like the manual says. I am running a YS .56 in it. I also prime the motor on the first flight of the day. It starts every time on the first crank until the bearing fails. Is there a substitute that is stronger i can use or a modification i can do? Any help is appreciated.

When the motor is running is the start shaft easy to stop with your finger? It should be just turning a bit with the motor running.   Also did you replace the start shaft that could also be bent.

Yes the coupling is easy to stop with very light finger pressure. I have also replaced the starter shaft as well just to be on the safe side but unfortunately with the same outcome. Everything is also smooth in the free wheeling direction.

The clutch shoe been replaced as well? Fan hub been replaced? Was the motor in a crash?  Does the heli have any drifting in the tail?

Just throwing out some ideas trying to narrow it down.

No. This is a new kit and new motor. I have not even pushed it yet because of motor break in.

Do you have the motor shims in?? I have seen this before as a culprit to what you are experiencing. Also looking at the Clutch Bell (Looking at the side), You should see just a hint of the clutch shoe, a nice straight line,  Basically letting you know the Clutch bell is perfectly aligned with the clutch shoe... Are you seeing any Metal Deposits anywhere? Any Debris at all around the Problem area?  If you can Shoot me a side view of the Heli showing the Engine/Fan shroud/ and clutch bell. Also one looking straight down the top of the start shaft... Maybe this will help in leading us to any clues.. Be patient we will sort it out.

Yes I have the motor shims in. On mine with out the shims in i have no backlash between the pinion and the main gear. I also had it aligned as you said. I have torn the motor out to replace the one way bearing right now so no pictures. There is no debris in or around the area. I am hoping that I have just had a string of bad luck with the bearings. Maybe a bad lot number of them. I ordered a couple from boca bearings. Hope those will work better.

Nic,

  Boca bearings had some bearings that were bad. I ordered a few for my OS engine and after 5 flights they were gone. The second one that I put in actually destroyed my motor cause of a roller ball breaking in half dropping into the motor. Spent the extra money to get factory's bearings and no issues since. Hope this helps with a decision.

Just out of curiosity, are you using the Align starter?

I had some problems yesterday.  First time I would hit starter it would start to spin and just lock up.  Second hit and engine would fire right up.  Align starter as well.

My experience with the Align starter is that it is very rough on all the starting components. It seems to be rough not smooth when turning like a bad vibration or shaking.

I use a Sullivan Dynatron on 5S 3600mAh with a one way Hirobo start shaft. Nice and smooth with no problems starting a 90.
