Futaba SBUS question
« on: September 20, 2012, 09:11:40 AM »
OK you Futaba freaks, I have sold my DX8, long story.

I am either ordering a new DX18, or giving into the dark side and getting a Futaba T8FG Super. I just love the feel of the Futaba over the DX8.

My only reservation is currently I fly all VBar which is VERY easy with Spektrum sats.  I am not afraid to put SBUS RXs on them, but I am trying to find out how much this will cost me.

I see there are MANY different SBUS HV RXs.  Help me out.  Knowing that I will ALWAYS use VBar, or possibly CGY750, can I get away with one of the 3 port SBUS RXs? I don't need the RX to have the servos plugged into it, they are plugged into the VBar.

If I end up having to buy 5 $150 RXs, I will just get the DX18, but if I can get this done for under $800, I will go with my gut and get the Futaba.

I will need a total of 5 RXs and the T8FG comes with one.

And one person whispers from the crowd: Get the 18!!!  Haha. Good luck on your decision man. I'm sure either one will serve you well.

OH man this is a hard choice...

Looks like I only need the R6203SB RX for use with VBar or CGY750 and SBUS.  With everything would need to change over, it is actually more expensive to get the DX18...

Guess i just have to decide if I want to redo all my helis, or just re set them up. It s chore either way.

Get the Futaba. Yes you'd only need the SB6203 RX.

Well the R6203SB is discontinued and replaced by the R6303SB, but the price difference is minimal.

I have decided to stick with the Spektrum stuff. I have too many micros and BNF/AR7200BX stuff that would require a second TX.

If I were to find a stupid deal on a futaba system, I might rethink, but I don't like the idea of needing a second radio for the micros.

Thank you all for your time.

I will give my two cents...

I have been a die-hard JR guy since day one. I would say that I pretty much still am at heart, but went to the 8FG last year. The 12X I had wasn't up to par any longer with the newer, high-speed and low latency units. I am also a stickler for the feel of the radio and I didn't like the 11X at all (really wide gimbal spacing like the Futaba). The new JR XG8 and XG11 transmitters do have my attention though.

Enter the 8FG. It is Futaba's attempt at creating a JR radio. What I mean is the feel is very much like a JR, not a typical Futaba. The gimbals are closer together and super smooth. Of the dozen or so friends I have who have 12X transmitters, I can't think of one who isn't using an 8FG now.

Changing over... I switched my Logo from Spektrum with the 12X to Futaba R6303SB on the V-Bar at a fun fly in three minutes. Seriously. It was that fast and I didn't loose any info.

As for the DX18 and other Spektrum transmitters... I hate to say this, because I have good friends who work for Spektrum, but please personally try the tx before buying it. All of the DX18 transmitters I have tried had the throttle/collective that felt like it had grit or sand in it and all of the other axis were very 'springy' like the cheap simulator transmitter gimbals. I would say they weren't even 1/3 as good as what you would find on a old DX7.

I also have the Bind-N-Fly aircraft and helicopters. On the larger airplanes, I switch them over to Futaba receivers and for the micro stuff I have my old trusty DX7. A used DX7 or DX6i isn't that expensive.

Hmm that's the second time I've heard of someone not liking throttle on the 18. Mine has been as smooth as butter since I opened the box. I wonder if there's some bad ones out there?

Yea I was kind of worried about it when I ordered it and then saw an issue with it but I figured if it was too bad HH service would take care of me. Luckily it's been fine.

Pulled the trigger on a new DX18. LHS got some in and I was able to hold the 8FG and DX18 both. The Gimbles on the 18 feel awesome. Liquid smooth and I love the new "thumbs" friendly spikes on the sticks.

I have already rebound and setup my TDR and E7. Will do the rest at the Fun Fly tomorrow while I wait my turn to fly.

See you in the air  8)
