Help with E6 Build from A-z
« on: November 02, 2012, 03:54:19 PM »
Coming from the 450 world I'm now ready for my long awaited dream of owning an a Synergy E6. However I feel I need a personal consultant to put together all of the components of the build. Is there a source someone can point me to help me through everything I need for the build. If not I hope to go through the process from a-z so that someone else down the line can use this post as a resource.

Servos?

Batteries size & make?

Flybarless receiver? Does it need a battery pack if so what size and make?

Motor: Size make and model?

Other items needed... I had seen that a spindle shaft is needed. Thought that was weird as the head from my research seems all ready together in kit.

Speed Controller? I like Castle Creations (make model)

Separate BEC?

Pitch Curve Min & Max

Throttle Settings

Governor Mode- resource to learn how to configure. CC has a good manual but still unsure how to properly set up so I don't blow up the machine

Any advice I could get would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately at my club Heli guys are a minority, please help!!!

Well I will chime it to get the ball rolling for you. Others will put in their two cents as well.
Motor- cant go wrong with the hacker turnado 460kv. Good price and works well in the E6 and E7. For a little more pop go with a scorpion 4535-540.

Servos - depends on budget and brand preference. Either way I suggest going HV servos for the sake of simplicity and run a 2s lipo for receiver power.
Look at the Savox HV's. I picked up a set at IRCHA and they are great. Good price also.

Flight battery versus BEC. See above.
I would not run a BEC on anything larger than a 500 unless you use a backup like the one from Scorpion.

Ok. Forgot what else was asked....

What radio system do you use and flybarless are you thinking about?

Ok. Castle HV 120 for ESC.
12S 4400MAH batteries.
Consider a VBAR or Helicommand (new lower price) for the Flybarless Unit.

Cheers,
Alan

Alan, thanks for the quick response.

I have a Spectrum Dx8, I've never used a BEC just thought it was mandatory on anything with "super power". How do you run the receiver battery.. where does it plug into, where do you put it for easy access in and out? Not sure why I'm hung up on the receiver battery, probably easier than I'm imagining.

I plan on using ar7200bx as I'm familiar with the setup.

Yes. Using a receiver pack is the way to go (IMHO). I use a 2s Lipo (1800-2100mah) on both of my E7's. I run HV servos. Most receivers and flybarless units (including the ar7200bx) run fine on a 2S Lipo.  I don't even use a switch.  I just use deans connectors between the battery and receiver. Plug it up just before you connect your 12S main battery.

If you decide not to go with HV servos you can run an 2S LiFe battery pack, which is what I do.  I run a 2500mAh 2S. You just have to make sure your charger will charge them if you go that route.

I have the hacker a50-12l 470kv and a castle 120hv. GREAT combo in my opinion.

As for servos, the Savox sc-1267sg HV servos for the cyclics and the Savox SB-2272sg HV gyro servo for the rudder is a killer combo. Very fast and the cyclics can be found for under $100 each!

Straight 2s lipo into the fbl unit is perfect. I also don't bother with a switch. Just have a deans plug on the battery with the matching deans plug soldered to two servo leads running into the fbl unit. Works great. I run two servo leads because the servo leads are only rated 5a each. Will take more but with two paths i have never had an issue.

I prefer vbar, but there are many great fbl options. The heli command and total g systems get great reviews and the brain is making a strong showing.

On e6, i would shoot for as lite weight as possible. I would stick with 3300-4000mah packs. The e6 isn't tail heavy so don't need big packs to balance and this heli loves a lite setup.

Enjoy the build man, let is know how it goes.

Sorry I'm such a newb to this stuff. So a layout of the electronics are as follows. Servos, speed controller and Rx battery plug into the receiver (flybarless unit). How does the rx battery go into the receiver? I can't see in my minds eye how all that goes together.

Chris, I read your response on the rx battery with deans connector but your configuration boggles me, again can't see how all that stuff get's connected, could you produce a photo by chance. Also, I have taptalk on my ipad as well but can't post through it, as it says I'm not allowed even though I'm logged in. So I'm going through the site.

For an electric helicopter you need:

Airframe
Motor
Speed Controller (ESC)
BEC or RX pack to power the servos
3 Cyclic Servos
1 Rudder Servo
Gyro (Flybarless Controller if going FBL)
Receiver, although quite a few FBL Controllers have the ability to act as the receiver if you plug the Spektrum remote satellite receivers into it.

There are many ways to setup a helicopter. Some Speed controllers have built in BECs and you don't need RX packs, some people prefer seperate RX units, some like to use FBL controllers with sats for cleaner looking installs with fewer parts bolted on.

All of the above will work great, there is no "perfect" way to do it.

My setup is:

Synergy E7 (although will work fine for E6)
Hacker A50-12L 470kv Motor
Castle ICE2 120A HV ESC
2s Lipo receiver battery
Mikado Full Size Vbar - Blue Line with 2 Spektrum DSMX Remote Sat Receivers (I don't run a seperate RX)
JR 8917 HV Cyclic Servos
Savox SB-2272SG HV Gyro Servo

I connect the receiver pack to the Vbar directly. The full size VBar has several extra ports for plugging in power.

I use one of these custom harnesses:

Deans plugs into the RX packs, and the two Servo leads plug into the Vbar like pictured here. The allan driver is pointing to the two servo leads coming from the battery:

The RX pack is strapped to the side of the frame, sorry I didn't think to take a picture of the pack, there are plenty of places to mount a battery.

I hope this helps.

To save weight you can also use the Scorpion Backup Guard.... Very light and very simple to use.....
"Rock"
Team Synergy/RailBlades/Scorpion/Giant Power Batteries...

Ok thank you everyone for your input so far. I have decided on the following stuff for my E6 Build:

SYNERGY E6       COST
Kit                   $849.95

POWER SYSTEM
Spectrum ar7200bx    $239.99
Spektrum Satellite    $34.99
Western Robotics Hercules Super BEC    $99.97
Hacker 470 Motor    $178.99
Castle ICE120 HV2    $211.95
pinion 15T (included)

SERVOS
SAVOX
sc-1267sq HV (Cyclic)    $95.99     $287.97 (3)
SB-2272sg HV (Rudder)    $119.99

BATTERIES (what to choose????)
Thunderpower 10s 3850mah (Matt Botos)    $299.99
Thunder Power 6S 3850mAh (2)    $199.99

BLADES
Rail Blades 606 mm    $80.00
Rail Tail Blades 96mm    $24.50

Total Cost $2,428.29

What battery configuration should I choose? It seems like a waste to me to have two batteries to charge with the 6s 3850 configuration when I could charge one 10s. Plus I'm unsure as to how to join the two batteries and I read somewhere that the 10s batteries have a two connectors for the balance plug... so not sure how to properly charge them either.... lots to learn  :)

Looks like a very solid build! On 10s I think you are good to go. If you decide to go 12s you might need a 13t pinion.  I can't remember if the kit comes with one. I know it comes with two.

I run that same hacker motor on my E7 in 12s. It's a beast.

Is the 10s hard to charge 2 balance connectors to 1 power connection. What else should I know?

Well you will need to either invest in a 10s charging board or charge the 2 5 cell packs individually. The iCharger 3010 will charge it as one pack and balance all 10 cells safely.
