Synergy for my first build.
« on: December 24, 2012, 10:56:29 PM »
Hi All,
Barry here looking for my first kit build.  Been looking for the last two years while training on smaller helis and think I've found what I'm looking for in a kit and a community to go with it. Strangely just finished a book by Stephen Covey titled "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" One of the last topics discussed is "Synergy". Then found myself tuning to the Synergy RC website.  Looking at and E5 or E7 any opinions coming from the 450 world? Know all of the tech details between the two aircraft just looking for gut opinions? Looks like most of you own both?

Let me second the welcome Barry. I currently am in the middle of an E5 build and it will remain and E5 on 6S however this will be my first true electric heli so that's why I want to keep it that way.

When it boils down to it you're going to want to decide how big you want and how much you're okay with spending in set up and crash costs. The E5 is a great size in the middle since it's a true 550 class and you can always stretch it to a 600 class if you want that bigger presence at a later time. Plus with the ability to start with 6S batteries and go all the way up to 12S on a stretch, the power options are virtually limitless.

I'm just a big advocate of starting in this class because it can grow as you grow or stay the same if you prefer to remain there.

Regardless, as previously mentioned we are all here to help in any way possible. You'll be on the track you want to be in no time.

Barry welcome. I too am a new Synergy owner. You have made the right choice! Everyone on this site has been very gracious in helping me through my build (E5). The engineering and quality of parts will blow your mind. This will be my 6th Heli and has been the best build to date. I know it will fly better than anything I have based upon how well everything goes together... no slop its amazing!!!!

He'll Barry and welcome!

The E5 in my opinion is a great larger heli get into. I progressed originally from a 250 then to a 450 then to a 500 size. I could have just skipped the 500 really.  I purchased my first synergy used late last year (N5) and haven't looked back. The only non-Synergy heli I fly at this point is a 130x. I own an N5c, two e7's and two E5's.

If you are staying with electrics then the E5 is just the ticket. The 550 size is not nearly as intimidating as a 600 or 700. I am about to build my second E5. The first was done as a 10s machine with 556 blades. Flies great and flight times at 2250 headspeed are around 5-1/2 minutes not problem. I stretched that one this weekend and it is now a 600 machine with no changes in motor or battery. Only flew it once briefly due to the weather.

The second machine will be 6s using the Align 600mx motor, Castle 100a ESC and Align servos. I want to see if the stock Align 550 parts would work ok on the E5. I had all of these on hand except the motor.  I anticipate no problems with this setup and plan on running it at 2250HS also.

Again welcome.

Cheers
Alan

first of all great book! secondly, both the E7 and E5 are great machines in their own right.  you wont find better machining and quality!! Coming from a 450 I wouldnt expect to many ppl to jump straight to a 700 class machine BUT the beauty of the E6/7 is just that you have a choice right out of the box.  700's can be very intimidating, but it depends on the individual and their budget.  obviously replacing 556 blades is a lot easier to swallow versus 696 blades, but again to each his own.. the E5 as you may have read is verastile as well..build it as an E5 or stretch it as an E6. It's smaller frame set and lighter weight certainly makes it a high performing machine.

hope we've all helped you! good luck!!

Ok the winner is E7! ;D  Now on order! kit and blades! I tend to fallow the go big or go home theory which is not mentioned in the book referenced early. Did a lot of looking and reviews and just love how quite it is and the over all design and  looks great. Looking to set up for mild learning mode.  Looks like 2000ish is a good head speed? Thinking the new Ice2 castle, not sure on the servos and FBL controller yet.

Thanks for all your input!

Glad to hear that Barry. I have two E7's.  One with 690 blades and a hacker motor. The other with a Scorpion 4035-560 running the 716 blades. I run 1950 on the 690 machine and 1850 on the 716 one.  Both use a Castle Ice 2 HV120. I really like the lower headspeeds.
FBL units are a hard decision these days. Lots of good units out there. I have CGY750's, VBar, Helicommand and most recently an IKON.  No complaints with any of them. Helicommand is my personal favorite right now followed by the CGY750.

Cheers
Alan

Congrats on your new E7, you are going to love it. I'm with Alen, I like the lower head speeds.  The lower head speed takes a little of the super aggressiveness out of the collective.  Welcome to Synergy!
