M3x0.05 thread repair?
« on: March 17, 2013, 08:58:47 AM »
My aft canopy mount stud hole is damaged in the main shaft bearing block. Does any one find it an advantage to own a $50-$70 helicoil kit for this popular M3 size?
The new block runs $56. I'm on the fence with changing it or repairing it?

Any other ideas repairing it. I could epoxy it in?

Back before i bought a re-coil kit i  used a M3 x .05 STI tap and inserts i bought at our bolt supplier.
Has to be a STI tap though (Screw Thread Insert). I was able to start the insert with a filed down piece
of piano wire. It's better to have the correct tool though.

Agreed I have put them in with a Dremeled screw. Found the inserts enough just need the STI tap?

Think I might just run that bearing block on the bottom with the screw out for now. See what happens with my next crash.

Tail box pinch bolt threads gave out. Just ordered a M3x0.05 thread kit.
I've got two expensive parts with stripped threads. Seems the small thread pitch doesn't hold up with to much disassembly reassembly.

Now that I have ordered the thread repair kit I'm not sure if it will work on this application? Essentially will have to install it backwards and cut the tang off
In the split? Going to be a stretch!

Something like that i'd just put a longer bolt and nut on it. What I had to do to one of my boom support clamps.

Yep was thinking that would work. How's the nut handle the angle?

Send me a email and I will help you . Let's do this right way. It would be a shame knowing it was a repair.

You need to me careful with the type of threadlocker. Some brands are gummy and will not help the cause.

I will run a tap through the parts to make sure the threads are ok.
