recommended spares??
« on: March 25, 2013, 10:11:15 PM »
Just wondering about the unfortunate crashes experienced to date by you nice folks... what parts tend to require replacement.
Thanks in advance.

Typical crash parts: Head axle shaft, Main shaft, Tail boom, Torque Tube, Tail output shaft, Skids and struts and of course main blades & tail blades.  I'm sure others will chime in with additional parts.

Rich covered the majors I believe.  In addition I have broken a tail bell crank, bent swash follower arms and bent main grip arms.  Of course that was on some bad crashes.  The main and head axle bearings can also take a hit and get notchy with a bad crash.  I have yet to break a tail drive gear though!

Cheers

I was kind of apprehensive about going to a TT drive because of all the posts I had read about tail gears stripping so easily.  I have bent three or four tail booms bad enough that they also bent the torque tube (plus one snapped) and I have yet to have a damaged tail gear.  That tail drive train is built tough!

If you fly in the cold, get some spare TT gears, as the plastic gets brittle with colder temps ( under 32 deg f). You won't strip them flying, but touching ice or snow a little hard might.

That is good to know... Thanks.

This is my first time going with a spare airframe. It's nice to just pull the needed assemblies and parts. Just had my first E7 crash and its crazy how many odd parts you don't think you need till you start the rebuild. No waiting just reorder want you use and build up the spare again. This also helps with the fact that not all the parts you will need will be in stock at any one time or vender.

I have a spare airframe for my Beam E4, got it used.
Sure is convenient, but the used beam was a lot cheaper than a spare E5.

For sure not saying its the cheapest route. For me it's all about time and the lack of it. Very conveinent.

Totally understand, as I said I'm doing that with my Beam and you never know when an E5 can pop up on the used market. (There already have been a couple and they get snatched up VERY fast)

Yep it's hard to sit on a $850 E7 kit. My last crash was hopefully my worst crash ever at $470 for parts. I just wish I had the other kit build and ready to change out parts. Still rebuilding.

I use to subscribe to the "need spare parts" crowd.   Not down playing it at all, however, I have found that I like to keep parts that wear out on hand (mostly bearings) and purchase what is needed after the crash.   I do have some that I keep as a must, main shaft, feathering shaft, all bearings for the head and main shaft plus bearings in the tail.  I have found it hard to keep "all" the parts on hand that are needed unless you have another kit.  Soooo... I rather have a back up bird or two ready to go..

Well I do have backups ready to fly, just other brands.

I kind of got burnt a little with one model where parts availability became an issue and I was grounded due to a $4 part. Fortunately a member of another forum had spares and helped me out.

Yeah OP... nothing burns me more than waiting on a 4$ dollar part..   Do whats best for you without a doubt, I just have yet to have a crash where I had everything on hand that I needed... I guess lawn darting them does not help when you blow up frames and servos though...  ::)
