Never owned an 8FG but after flying with Tommy's in Birmingham I am glad i went 14SG if for no other reason, the back button!

The space between the rear switch on the right and the throttle hold is pretty tight for larger fingers.  It's a great radio and if it feels good go for it.  Aside from the telemetry and a better timer notification there is not much difference in the 8fg and 14.  The timer sound on the 8fg is a little anemic and there is no vibration warning. The 14 has a louder notification and there is vibrate also.

Cheers

I had the 8FG and now using the 14SG. Same platform 14SG adds vibration for timer and telemetry (which is great when flying in winter with a radio glove because timer sound is very weak). Also I wanted telemetry. If you don't care for this extras then go with the 8FGH.

Hopefully, some of the online stores will have Father's day sales this weekend but I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the 14SG, either way.  My DX8 has telemetry but I never used it.  Maybe since Futaba doesn't require buying an extra module to plug the sensors into, I'll use it.

As for receivers, since the SK540 is S-Bus compatible, can I use the R7003SB Sbus-2 receiver instead of the R7008SB?

My favorite RX if you aren't worried about telemetry, is the R6303SB - HV ready. Only has 3 physical channels, but with SBUS supports all 14 ;) Much cheaper than the r7000 series.

Okay, so that's basically the non-Fasstest version of the first receiver that I asked about.  That really answers my question, then.  I don't need to use an 8+ channel receiver with an FBL controller that supports S-BUS.  Sweet.

I was in the same boat with you last year, I actually have had 0 troubles with my DX8 but didn't want to chance it.  I also didn't want to swap over to all new rx's (I love my sats) so I stuck with JR/Spektrum and picked up the JR 11x.  Really wish I would have done this to start, the 11X is a great radio with tons of freedom to program what you want on what switch you want.

Sounds like your already set on the Futaba though, good luck, I hear great things about them.

-snip-But just recently made the decision to Retool the Whole Fleet and Switch to all Futaba. CGY750's, the whole 9 yards. Best move I ever made!! I couldn't be happier with the performance.  -snip-

Best Regards,

Kevin

Kevin,

What FBL controllers were you using prior to switching over and how do you like the CGY-750 in comparison?  I'm happy with the Skookum SK540 but I'm always up for trying something different and the way the CGY-750 has some of its features controllable from the transmitter seems pretty handy.

Rodney.

Thanks John.  I really did consider the JR radios, too.  It's kind of funny because the looks of JR and Futaba are like at the opposite ends of the spektrum (haha).  The JR radios look like something out of the Transformers movie and the Futabas are pretty plain.  At this point, I guess I really don't care, as long as it functions well.

One step closer to getting back in the air.  I ordered a 14SG and two R6303SB receivers.  My Father's Day gift to me!  ;D

I got my 14SG yesterday.  I've got a really busy week, this week, so I'm not sure when I'm going to get to fly but I cannot believe the difference in feeling between the 14Sg and the Spektrum DX8 when holding them in my hands.  I think I'm going to like this radio, a lot.
