Maidened my E5 6S today
« on: June 09, 2013, 07:00:50 PM »
Maidenhead the E5 today!

Well, the maiden battery pack is complete! No issues other than I brought the wrong Lipo bag and when I went to run a second pack all I had was 6s 2600 instead of 4400 packs Doh!  One thing I noted is that it seemed a little tail heavy even with the single pack all the way forward.  Might be able to add a click of trim in the FBL setup or...

Congrats on the maiden.  Balance depends a little on the brand packs. I am using GensAce 4400's with no balance problems.  The pack will need to be all the way up front.  If you have not move the lower frame brace to the forward location I suggest you do so.  I push the 4400 pack back against the brace and then strap it in.  Works well.

Congrats on the maiden! Always feels good. As Alan mentioned, if you haven't moved the back carbon cross brace up front, do that for sure if you're going to keep running 6S.

That allows you to always have the right position of the battery and you can more accurately compare how different batteries affect CG.

You guys have me curious about this battery plate shifting thing.  I am about to build a 6S version of the E5.  How is the bottom plate configuration different than the manual?

The two holes that I've circled in this picture are there for either an extra lower frame brace (Manual Page 1) or you can move the one from the rear of the frame up to these holes.

Oh.  I see.  So you are shifting the position of the Lower Frame Brace Assembly (Cross Brace) from the back to the front mainly as a "reference" point for the single 6S battery.  Got it.  Thanks.

Yep, Matt said he put those holes there specifically for that purpose.  I thought it was a really cool touch.  I ended up leaving mine where it was and I just use those holes as a reference point when I slide my battery in.  Actually, now that I think about it, I pretty much line up the front of my 4400mAh Sky lipos with the front of the battery tray and the CG is just about perfect.

If I bring the cross brace forward, should I get extra spacers for the back, where the cross brace normally goes?

That is what Matt recommended to me, when I mentioned it. Either that, or another cross brace.

The pic is extremely helpful. Thanks for that. It just occurred to me that I am running Ralph's FBL Rotors battery tray as well and it's the 12S tray rather tan the 6S so I was just strapping the pack up front and sliding the whole tray in rather than cutting the tray down for just 6S.... lazy me.  I think I'm going to move the brace up and then shorten the tray and everything should be perfect.

You will need a 305-101 frame spacer to replace the one in the lower rear for the frame. This is needed to attach the boom supports.

Thanks Alan, I would probably have gotten it all moved forward and then to my horror realized I had no place to mount the boom supports :)
