how to check if motor is fried?

  hey guys,
 
  I just had my first uhhhhmmmm,..how shall I say, unforseen emergency landing,....(by landing I mean flop),..

  anywhoo,..while flying my e7 th motor cutt out and I was having a great time with the six previous flights till it hit pay dirt.

  after some dissassembly I found the source,...one of the leads from the esc connecting to the motor was shorting out on the carbon frame as evidenced by the melted and charred shrink tubbing..

  I powered the esc and motor out of the frame and it seems to be still in opperational order.

  now after this short I just wanted to make sure that I didn't damage the motor internaly,..would it not be working at all when powered? or should I be cautious that a failure may be in my unforseen future.
 
  what should I do or check?

Check for continuity through the motor. This will help diagnose a possible open short in the motor.  You could send the motor back to the manufacturer and ask them to check it out for you.

Other than that, I would replace the ESC and try it.

from the problem as you described it, it is very unlikely that you damaged the motor.  Damage to the ESC is much more likely.  But in either case, I think 95% of the problems that would pertain to this type of accident will be immediately self evident on spool up. And since the motor runs out of the frame, I would put everything back together, spool it up, and run one pack in a nice low hover and listen for any ugly sounding noise or changes in sounds during the course of the flight.  If it passes that test... game on.

  hey, thanx Mike and Chriss

  the meter I have at this time is a cheapo $2 harbor fright and won't give me a proper continuity check,...

  but like mike mentioned I'll give it a go in low hover for a few packs and see what comes of it.

  I have to say,thunder packs are pretty darn durable or I was really lucky, after the motor cutt I was in a piro spin,...I noticed it locked and it took off spinning ridiculously fast,...something flung out but wasn't sure at the time what it was.

  turns out it was the front lipo,..after picking up the pieces I found the lipo sread like a deck of cards fanned out,...MAGIC WOW!!!!lol

  not so funny at the moment but afterwards I could laugh,...

  I got everything home and checked the lipo on the charger,...remarkably the lipo still holds low IR on each of the cells so maybe I got away this time with it,,...

  if all is well with the motor and esc then I have to say I got off cheap with this crash.

  main blades, spindle, tt, boom, tail blades,tail push rod, and spur gear.

  remarkably all else survived,....only a partial sacrifice to the heli gods,..

  I hope they will be appeased and not rain fire on my village,lol
