Tail in the grass?
« on: July 27, 2013, 10:28:05 AM »
So I'm used to take off and landings on payment or nice take off spot. What does everyone do with deeper grass where the tail blades are an inch or two in?
No big deal just let it weed-wack?
Some sort of landing board?
I have I've seen sliding autos and everything in-between for landings.
Seems to put a load in the tail section.
Thoughts?

Lawnmower ? :-)

Our field is grass and the person that does the mowing keeps the runway pretty short but in the morning hours the sun can be a challenge. We fly off to the right behind the runway but the grass is longer. Most if my landings are done there. Yes I do make divots but unless its a really botched landing no harm is done other than grass stains on the tail blades.

Cheers
Alan

Just flip it inverted and cut the grass! LOL. I can see me out at the local soccer field mowing a landing pad.

In tallish grass I notice wear on the tips of the tail blades. I rebuild the tips with thick super glue or JB weld and keep on flying.

Not sure if I would recommend using KB weld on blades.  CA maybe.  Are you balancing the blades afterwards?

My tail drive train sounds louder than it did on spool down. Kind of gear train noise don't remember it making that noise before.

I sand it back to the original shape. The tips seem tougher as a result.
