Screws backing out
« on: July 27, 2013, 07:30:29 PM »
This is first for me, have had 5 screws loosen on my E7se and lost one from the trans. I used blue loc-tite but I'm about to go to red. Who out there uses Red on all screws?? Thanks.

I don't use red but I had similar problems when I was using off brand Loc-Tite. When I went to Lowe's and bought the name brand original stuff, everything has been solid.

Did you clean the oil off of the screws prior to applying the thread locker? Also, how long did you let it cure before flying?

The thread loc I use came from a Auto Parts Store so I'm sure it's the real thing. As for did I clean the screws, no I did not. A guy at the field told me he soaks his screws is in alcohol before useing. I have never done that but it does sound logical. I give the loc tite a good day + to set before flying. Again this new to me to happen unless the E7se comes from a place that has special oil they coat them with. I hate to use Red cause I don't want to strip or melt with heat.

Heading to IRCHA tomorrow so will see what others do. Thanks.

I also soak them in denatured alcohol for a good 15 minutes before using them.

Good practice is to always soak the screws in alcohol (91% or so) and wipe before applying Loc-Tite. I do this with all my heli's as it removes any oil residue and allows for the Loc-Tite to work properly.

Have a safe trip to IRCHA!

Definitely like Alan said, I myself soak the hardware in denatured alcohol. And I also agree with brandon, off brand thread lock sucks! I used some on an N5 once and I was loosing hardware left and right. Also give it ample time to dry once installed

I'll also agree with the off-brand thread locker comments.  I had some stuff I bought at Hobbyclown and it sucked. I only use the Henkel Loctite brand now.

SGM, Blue Locktite 243 will solve your problem and it's oil insensitive .  Permatex is as bad as the re-branded hobby shop stuff IMHO.
