Servo Choice, E7
« on: October 13, 2011, 03:02:23 PM »
I have stripped my Logo 600SE and am replacing it with the E7.  All the electronics out of the Logo are good, except I am considering replacing the Jr Servos (no slop yet, but will soon I am sure) with the Bls 255HV's for cyclic and 256HV for the tail.  Is there a remarkable difference between the 255/256 combo and the Bls 451/251 combo?  Worth the price difference?

Setup:
Jive Eighty HV with Heatsink
Pyro 700-45L 14 tooth pinion 2150 head-speed
Edge Blades until Rails become available
Vbar 5.2

My poor logo is a skeleton now!

I run BLS 253/ 251 in all of my set-ups and am very happy. I have flown the heli with 255hv/256hv and it does feel a little more "crisp" not to mention they are more efficient. I personally won't be swapping all my equipment out for the high voltage setup, but if you have the funds for it, I would go for it!

Yes, 100% worth the price difference!
Your gains will be higher and the helicopter will feel much more locked in.

I would give the E7 a fresh set of servos :)

$600 in servos en route!!  I figure a new heli deserves it! ;D

I anticipate a future dedicated cyclic servo that has the same frame rate as our current Futaba tail servos. If we could put a 760us servo on the cyclic and provide 200oz of torque and .06 sec speed it would feel absolutely amazing. Mark my word..... this is next.

I'm sure you know what Futaba are working on, therefore I will trust what you are saying. This is only going to mean that I will need to spend another fortune on servos soon.

He does have a point, it would be the next logical progression.  Your word is marked!

It's interesting that the BLS255HV and BLS451 servos have the same specs at 6.0V:
Speed: 0.10 sec
Torque: 142 oz • in

The BLS255HV servo specs at 7.4V are:
Speed: 0.08sec/60  (7.4V)
Torque: 12.0kg  cm (7.4V) ==> 166.6 oz • in

That's an improvement, but it's not a huge improvement.

So when I saw the Futaba BLS157HV specs, the torque numbers floored me:
Speed: 0.11sec/60 ° (7.4V)
Torque: 37.0kg • cm (7.4V) ==> 513.8 oz • in (!!!!)
Speed: 0.14sec/60 ° (6.0V)
Torque: 31.0kg • cm (6.0V) ==> 430.5 oz • in (!!!!)

Shouldn't these be the ticket? Or, is this just a case of pure overkill, with a servo that has massive torque -- which in turn may need massive amps? I mean, there must be a torque value that's high enough to move the swash for even the most demanding moves. For example, there are a lot of guys out there using BLS451 @ 6V on 700-class helis. While these servos don't have eye-popping specs, the pilots that use them aren't complaining that the heli isn't doing what it's told.

So my questions are (and these are for a 700-class FBL heli, flying hard 3D):
1) what really is the minimum amount of torque you need for "good" heli response? For lack of a better explanation, I guess "good" means that the heli is doing everything you're telling it to do, without ever feeling that the heli seems "disconnected." I reckon that if you installed some servos rated at 75 oz-in and 0.25 sec on any 700-class heli, it wouldn't fly so well. LOL!
2) what's the minimum servo speed needed (for cyclic servos)? For example, I know lots of guys that prefer using the Futaba BLS351 (206 oz • in and 0.13 sec @6V) over the BLS451 as a cyclic servo. It seems they believe the higher torque outweighs the slightly slower speed.

Matt, what do you think?

Hi,

I am currently using the Futaba BLS451's and BLS251's on my N5/N5C and also my E6, they are outstanding servos for the price. The BLS451's have excellent speed and torque ratings and are very efficient.

I have the BLS451's running at 7.4v on my N5 running through a Spektrum AR7100R receiver and also have them running at 6v on the E6 running a seperate regulated receiver supply. I have a seperate lipo powering the avionics which is 2150mah and after a couple of flights i'm not even touching the halfway mark with this pack so i could quite happily have a pack half the size and save some weight.

With regards to the Speed Vs Torque, there is definetly some truth to this as back when i had two N9's i had them both setup identical except the servos as one was installed with JR DS8915's (DS8717 in the US) and the other had Futaba 9351's and i found the one with the Futaba 9351's which had more torque flew much better and smoother, it responded faster due to the extra torque.

Would also assume direct swash to servo links would like more torque?

Definitely do not skimp on the torque.

I use BLS156HVs!

Specs:
Speed: 0.12sec/60 ° (7.4V)
Torque: 21.0kg • cm (7.4V)
Speed: 0.15sec/60 ° (6.0V)
Torque: 18.0kg • cm (6.0V)

They aren't the fastest HV servos around but they have tons of torque which is the main thing you need for flybarless! I use them with a BeastX and they preform great and have plenty of speed for smack-style flying!  :)

Agreed, speed is nothing without sufficient torque. Those 157 seem really awesome.
