696 vs 716/106 vs 116
« on: December 13, 2013, 06:22:32 PM »
Just piecing my build together and that got me to wondering about which size mains to get.  I talked with a friend that flys a 700 machine, and he had a set but said his motor was a little on the weak side to spin them, so he traded with a guy for 696s.  I have a Scorpion 4530-500 LE motor for my E7SE build.

What are the pros and cons for the different size main blades?

Same question for the tail blades.  I don't plane on running high head speed (I haven't thought of what head speed to run yet, but it will probably be lower than most, due to still learning).

Thoughts, suggestions welcomed!  :)

I have run the 716s with a KDE 700XF 495Kv and with the same Scorpion 4530-500 LE as you, they fly great!  The 696s are a little quicker flip/roll rate, but man the 716s really float!  You can auto forever...  I love them (but I am not a hard 3D guy)!

I am running 2150 head speed, and the 106s are great for that head speed.  I tried the 116s with the 696s, but I think the RPMs were way too high by the noise they made.  I think there is a slight clearance problem with the 716/116 combo, hopefully someone else will clarify that.  I did purchase the lower ratio gear for the transmission, but never got around to installing it.

I have 716/106 rails on my E7se. Love the feel in the air. Agreed they aren't quite as snappy as the 696, but they are still plenty fast enough for me!  I just love the extra hang time at the end. You can really hang the E7se forever!

I myself run 716's with 106's as well as 696's and 116's on another bird. If you want to Auto for Days, run the 716's. If you want that pop and snap like Chris Mentioned, run the 696's. Great Blades that fit many flying styles.. Good luck..

Thanks guys!  I'm going to try out the 716s and 106s.  Maybe after some flights I'll get some of the other to do some comparisons.  I like the idea of being able to auto for a long time  :)

I wish my transmitter had a reset button.

Yes, I just found that post after some searching.  Chris mentions you should move the tail box back 5mm if using 716's with 116's.  Anyone run this combo without moving the tail box back?

I have not tried it yet I do have the bigger tail blades in stock, and I think you have to put the n7 tail fin on its longer, so blades don"t eat the earth

I've been using the rail 116's on my E7SE but only with 690 mains.  No problem with the tail blades hitting the ground.  I just purchased a set of rail 716's and just wanted to know if I can bolt them on and go fly.  After I installed them I spun them around until they were directly over the tail rotor blades and it looks like they overlap a little.  But this only happens when the tail blades are parallel to the ground.  This means the mains would have to flex approx. 3 inches toward the boom in order for them to contact each other.  Is this possible in a hard maneuver?

I would not recommend running 716s and 116s on an E7se.

It isn't a blade flex issue as much as the lagging blade slacks back in the grip a bit and brings the tip of the blade lower.

The E7se head is lower than the old E7 head so to run 716 mains with 106 tails you have to pull the tail box back ~4mm.  This is more than safe as there is still plenty of float room for the TT.

716/116 combo isn't recommended.  The E7se has a 4.9:1 tail ratio and 116 tails shouldn't be needed unless your target head speed is less than 1700ish.

Chris, thanks for the info but do you mean 116's on the tail in your quote below?

"The E7se head is lower than the old E7 head so to run 716 mains with 106 tails you have to pull the tail box back ~4mm.  This is more than safe as there is still plenty of float room for the TT."

106's should be fine with 716's without any modifications, correct?

Yea, I think he mistyped that, as I run 716s and 106s and I didn't have to move the tail box at all.
