14sg headache lol...
« on: January 02, 2014, 02:11:31 PM »
::) soo... i finally got my 14sg! been a die hard spectrum guy, but since my dx8 shows signs of aging, got me this one! overall apart from learning chineese (read as futaba programming compared to spectrum), i quite like it! just a couple of quirks/questions...

a) timer setting... i like that dx8 has timer dependant on throttle percent setting, but 14sg has it dependant on throttle stick position... :(  if all flight modes are idle up, i kinda dont mind that, but is there a way to 1) in normal mode timer  starts moving stick a notch from bottom,2) idle up timer is allways running and 3) throttle hold timer is allways stopped?

b) gain setting... im using brain/ikon.. if i tick 'set gain on transmitter', does that mean i set only rudder gain on transmitter or aeleron/elevator also?

c) im using brain+sbus rx, and i plug rx battery in brain... is there a way (apart from y cable) to get rx voltage telemetry? or can i plug my battery into rx, not in the brain to get voltage?

d) any suggestions on aftermarket (bigger cappacity li-fe?) as far as i understand it does not take lipo, and my expirience  with my dx8 nimh was quite poor!

im sure i will get more programming questions... but later! :) i just want to get my heli in air!!! thanks!

Hello! Let me try and answer some of these.

A: Timer: You can set the timers in the Futaba to trigger off a switch or Throttle position. I personally tied my timer to my Hold switch on Electrics and Flight mode on nitro.

B: Gain: at this time the only gain you can set in the TX on a brain is the Tail P gain.  This is mapped to Gear (channel 5) by default. This works well as the Gyro menu on the 14SGH also has tail on channel 5. Leave the gain in the TX set to AVCS and adjust the percentage to set gain. Remember, the 14sg gains are flight mode dependent. Make sure you cycle through your flight modes, including hold, and set the tail gain on all of them.  Positive numbers are Heading hold, negative are rate mode in the Brain world.

C: S-BUS power. What I did was run one power lead into the iKON/Brain and one into the RX. If all you want is RX system voltage, the sbus cable is already passing power from the iKON to the RX, that will tell your 7008Fasstest RX what the RX system voltage is. I just like having two power paths from the battery or BEC to help handle the amp loads.

D: I never tried to change my battery, but found that the battery provided was actually quite good. Right at a year of use still holding strong.

Hope this helps.

I went from a DX8 to the 14SG, as well, and the timer thing is still the one deal I wish they would update.  I ended up setting mine to stop/start with throttle hold, like Chris.

good idea on throttle hold... anyways i find myself using mode 1 with flat throttle curve more and more now with super-low headspeed! :) any ideas on which switch to asign to throttle hold? default 'sh' is momentary switch which im not happy with! :) and 3 position switch to throttle hold can be confusing...

B: Gain: at this time the only gain you can set in the TX on a brain is the Tail P gain.  This is mapped to Gear (channel 5) by default. yeah, i kinda not really like flight mode dependant gain so far! im not that good to notice big difference using a single gain on all 3 modes! but why i would need to set gain in throttle hold?

and... at least on transmitter i dont think i have negative gain... im running 47% (just a tiny bit of tweaking still needed), which is default 45% on brain...

C: S-BUS power. What I did was run one power lead into the iKON/Brain and one into the RX. well im learning futaba on my protos 500, where 3 mini +1 full size servo seems good enough for a single servo plug... and i just dont want to learn futaba programming, and learn nitro at the same time, while trying to get used to my first 600 (n5c) or 700 (7se) while my protos... well, already i dont really care if i trash it... http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=584999

thank you! :)

My Hold is on SG (3 position switch right above SH). The three position switch is nice because I can have a buffer. Have to come all the way up both clicks for hold. this way I don't hit it by accident. And when I am ready to line up a baby auto, I just click it once so it's just a touch away.

In a panic you won't have any trouble hitting the switch hard enough to trigger hold :)

Assuming you remember to hit throttle hold

There is a very detailed and informative review on the 14SG which covers several elec and nitro programming examples. The author has helped me with several questions.

Hello,

U have to activate Channel 7 and set a switch for this. Then u can see in brain software the banks switching..

thats done. thanks!

i finally fixed my 'learning heli', took it out and noticed strange thing... im running flat throttle curves in all 3 modes, with IU3 as normal, thing is even when i hit throttle hold, nothing happens untill i move throttle stick all the way down, and other way around, if i try swithching out of throttle hold my throttle stick has to be all the way down for it to work, otherways nothing happens... :/

on the other hand, i FINALLY finished ordering all the parts for my n5c, ordered 3 gallons of byron 30% rotor rage! and also dynatron starter!

Sounds like your are using the engine kill switch and not the throttle hold. Kill the engine swicth is setup with the throttle stick in the down position so you don't kill the motor in flight.

Moved my two back switches on the 14SG putting the momentary switch on the left. Now rigging SH for throttle hold and the Timer on and off. SG is now the timer reset. SF will be the momentary bail out on the BD 3SX. Very tricky to desolder the three pin switches from their boards with out compromising the circuits. Works pretty good the only thing is in normal mode the time I counting so I have to reset before taking off. Seems like they could solve this by pointing the timer at the throttle?

Yeah, not being able to start/stop the timer by throttle percentage sucks.  That was, seriously, the ONLY thing that I feel was a step backwards from my DX8 when I switched.  So, I just start/stop mine with throttle hold and reset it with SH.

Finally enjoying my 14SG with the BD3SX. I have my timer figured out and like how it starts. I have my bail out set up two ways. One with the momentary switch which I moved to the opposite side.  This triggers the bail out and climb out feature. I have another set of mixes going on to switch putting the helis into two coaxial modes using the switch above my left finger. I set the switch up backwards so a flick with my left index finger puts it into auto level no climb out. This is nice for practicing upside down circuits.
I figured out the head and gyro setting using the gyro menu options with Alan's help. The radio does feel a bit different then the spectrum and I was having a hard time adjusting back to the E5 on the DX8 so I changed it over to the 14SG also. Going to set the N7 up next.
Over it was a lot of hours watching videos and checking the manual to get to this point with the 14SG.
I am very pleased with the change over however would be opposed to staying with spectrum they have ease of use and cool buddy boxing features.
