Oooops! :(
« on: February 02, 2014, 09:30:04 AM »
Took advantage of the above freezing weather yesterday.
I was doing things to low and zigged when I should of zagged and punched it at the wrong time and it hit really hard!

At first glance...
Tail boom, control rod, support rods, torque tube all sheered (found the tail assembly 20 yards away)
Blades (look more like carbon fiber brushes now)
Castle 120HV ESC split open
Canopy break aways, Canopy is remarkably unscathed.
Don't know yet but probably main shaft and axle.
Main gear
one servo
... will probably be more when I break it down.

Here are some photos attached;

You split the ESC open and the canopy is unscathed.  That is remarkable.

Well I would take that as a good excuse to buy a Kontronik.   ;)

Started filling my shopping cart with the items that I can tell will be needed;

So far in my cart(FBL Rotors)... $250.45 not including the parts on the waiting list.
+ ESC
+ servo horns and 1 servo

And I have not torn it apart yet so there may be other bent or broken things  :-\

PS: Would you believe Ralph called me from his hospital bed (nothing serious) on a Sunday morning to tell me he has the waiting list parts in stock. What a guy!

Oh man, that sucks.
you know you can send the ESC back to castle for repair.
Did you screw the ESC down?

Wow thats a rough crash. I will say I avoid bolting down escs. If this had been velcro or double sided tape it might have survived ; (

Sorry man.

Yup.  Exactly why I use a scorpion strap to hold the ESC in place.  Had a crash once that fortunately only broke off the lugs and a corner of the ESC case.

Sorry to see that.  At least you have something on the bench to keep you busy for a bit.  Weather here went south again :-(

Cheers

Alan

I had a similar 1/2 inch strap as extra security to my velcro but had temp issues took it off velcro holding fine even during a crash and dropped ESC temps by several degrees

The ESC was bolted to the mount and I had meant to also put a couple of ties around it... one of those "I'll do it later" things.

Ouch!! That's a hard crash, but it looks like it has taken it pretty well considering.

With regards to the ESC, I agree with Alan and usually I don't bolt mine down but use a small piece of double sided Velcro to mount the ESC in place and then secure with a Velcro strap. Makes it easy to remove quickly if needed.

It actually looks like it could be repaired pretty easily with a new case kit, the small PCB board which has become disconnected appears to to have just come unplugged from the main board and separated when the heaviest part has broken forward with the forces of impact away from the plastic base plate. I would probably get that back to castle for a repair and check over to make sure there is no further damage.

Hope you get that baby back in the air soon!  :)
Cheers,
Ross

I hope you get your bird back in service soon.

I strap my ESC with zip ties.

Got all my parts from FBL this weekend... thanks Ralph
So I started rebuilding... I thought the one-way bearing was shot but I was wrong, it was the sleeve.
Check it out in the photos attached...
