Feathering shaft and dampers
« on: October 28, 2011, 10:22:45 AM »
I grabbed my E7 by the grips and moticed "a lot" of play in the head. It looks like the dampers are not tight enough. I have a video that shows this but it's not possible to upload videos with tapatalk.
Is that normal or does the head should very tight?

Mine has no play. Check your bearing size and let us know what they are.

I'm back at home. I'm going to disassembled the head and check that.
Thanks

Mine felt loose too. I took the head apart to check the OD on the outer thrust race.
Found the OD to be too large. A few minutes with a dremel tool fixed that and
on re-assembly i found all the "Play" in the dampening gone. I did use a bit thicker shim.
It had 1mm shims at first and i replaced them with 1 shim on each side that measured 1.01mm.
Not much of a difference but it did improve it tho.

Well, I have disassembled the head, Everything was as per the manual.
One of the damper was very soft. I was able to completely squeeze very easely with my two fingers. But the other one was "unsqueezable". So, I took two new dampers I had from a brand new N5 head and also the inner plastic sleeve from this head. It feets perfectly and there's no more trouble.
We'll see tomorrow morning...

I had the same problem what I found was the lube I was using was breaking down my dampers.

Branden,

What Lube were you using so no one else falls victim to that. I have seen that Before!!

We have found some of the kits have had these out of size thrust bearings, installed a new set with some new dampers and all was fine.  It seems one of the dampers was some sort of soft rubber compared to the other.

Flight Report :
Much better like this.
In addition, this morning I bought & installed RB 696 & 106
But I had to lower a lot my gains on Aileron -> from 60% to 45%
Does the mix of new blades and stiffer head could have some much impact on aileron gains  :-\ ???

While we're on the topic of dampers... Just to be sure -- these dampers must be greased, correct?

Sorry, I  don't have my manual with me and want to be sure; some other heli models work better with the dampers dry with no grease, but I'm 99% sure I read in the manual that the E6/E7 dampers should be greased. I usually use Dow Corning Molykote EM-30L synthetic grease which works well with plastic and rubber components.

Hi,

I always grease the dampers with a Silicone based grease like Triflow which is safe to use on rubber and O'Rings so it will not degrade the dampers. Just a small amount on the dampers and spindle shaft to allow everything to float and move freely.

Hope this helps,
Cheers!

My stock E6 dampers were either too soft or out of tolerance dimensionally because my head also had a lot of play.  Matt fixed me up with a new set of dampers and it's been rock solid for many many flights now.

I have just added a 15thou shim either side because the damping felt very soft after only a couple of flights.

Should I change the dampers instead ?

Hey guys,

I'm having a similar issue. I'm going to get the new dampers from Matt but in the mean time do you guys think its still safe to fly?
