Finished and Maiden
« on: May 22, 2015, 02:31:22 AM »
Took the E5s out today and put the first 3 packs through it. Everything went welll, there was no sign of low headspeed bobble and the tail looked like it had plenty of hold. I'm running 1730/1950/2100 rpm with the 626 mains, 96 tails and the 4.9:1 tail ration. I was able to do high speed backwards flight and backwards loops/Cubans without tail blowout even at 1730rpm so pretty happy with that.

I have ended up a little tail heavy so will try moving my Rx pack forward to under the front pack on the bottom of the frame but could still move my main packs forward a little if needed.

I am going to fit some shorter arms to the servos to get the Vbar closer to its ideal setup but it flew pretty well even as it was. A quick picture from before the maiden.

Congrats Dennis.  I found the E5 tail heavy anyway in both E5 and E5s setup.  I put as much electronics as i  ould on the front and then slid the packs forward a bit to get it to balance.

congrats!

thats weird both of mine balance perfectly. my E5S (just sold the other day to a fellow team member) used 3300ma 12S with CC120HV and CC BEC Pro up front, and my E5 uses 5000ma 6S with CC120HV and CC BEC Pro up front, with the canopy on, they balanced perfectly.

i did find an easy way to be sure you have CG perfect every time though. take your packs put them in the heli, and use a silver sharpie on your frames to make a line on the heli on both sides. slide the packs back and forth until CG is perfect with the canopy on and all 3 battery straps, then mark your packs with a black sharpie. i had to do this on my E7SE since i run a few different brand packs. it works perfectly.

I would guess having the BEC PRO up front is what makes the difference. My Rx pack is under the mainshaft so I will be getting a new pack that will fit under the front battery or maybe even under the ESC. That should help.

Well I managed to get some more packs through today after changing out the servo horns (see the other thread on the Vbar setup) and could definitely tell the difference. Very happy with the way it is flying, tail is excellent, tracking great, and very locked in locked in.

Well it took quite a bit of weight to get the heli to balance. First I went to a smaller capacity Rx pack that would fit well between the frames and moved it up towards the front of the heli so it is just behind the front LG mount. It weighs in at 110g compared to the 140g pack I was using positioned pretty much under the mainshaft.

I also moved the main packs forward so now the back of the front pack is just covered by the strap that passes throughout the frame just behind the front landing gear mount. The front of this pack is just about touching the bottom of the canopy nose now, so I can't go much further forward anyway.

Then I started adding weight into the nose of the canopy, but when I found I needed about 50g I decided I would have to mount the weight on the frame instead as it was getting too heavy for the canopy to have that hanging off the mounts. So I have made up a Lead weight that fits in under the battery tray between the front landing gear mount and the front frame spreader/battery mount. The weight is sized so it cannot move and is pretty much locked in place but I ended up with it being about 73g due to not being as far forward as the canopy nose, but I can't see how I could mount it much further forward unless I mount it under the battery tray tongue, but that will only gain me about 10mm so will maybe save a couple of grams. 73g may not sound like much but it is the weight of an extra full size metal servo so it is quite a chunk of lead.

So in the end I have had ended up with about 43g more weight in the heli to get it balanced from where I flew the maiden flights. For general flying having the C of G off a little may not be very noticeable with the FBL compensating somewhat, but for a competition setup, it is one of the things you want to have right on. So now I am about 400g over the weight of the Logo 600 this is replacing, which is a bit more than I would have liked but I did end up with heavier servos than I originally planned on, which also contribute to the rearward C of G. At a guess I could have shaved 70g off the current weight with the servos and reduced balance weight.

A quick update on my E5s. I've made a few changes to the setup, specifically the servos, I've swapped out the big heavy MKS X8 servos and put a BK mini (full size case) on the tail and Futaba 272's on the cyclic. This saved about 50g of weight all up, not that I could notice that or any difference in servo performance, but the X8 servos were better suited to the Protos Max V2 750 I just built so it made sense to move them over.

I am still loving the Heli and I'm now really comfortable with it. Had a great day out today and feel like it is doing everything I am asking of it, flying gracefully and smoothly now it is run in, the auto performance has also improved. I did have a minor crash a few weeks a go but just did the standard crash parts with boom and TT, head links, blade grip bearings, a grip arm and  main blades. So got out of it pretty well.

So thumbs up, it has easily replaced my Logo 600, and I don't miss it at all.

That's great to hear Dennis! The E5 626 is an awesome setup. I run 12s 4000mah packs in mine and it balances perfectly. A little extra flight time in place of dead weight ;)
