Thrust Bearing Grease
« on: November 19, 2011, 11:38:17 PM »
I'm about to run out of my last tube of Align 'kit' grease. What are some good alternative products for greasing up head and tail thrust bearings? - Thanks!

Steve,

I personally use a couple different Brands, Dow Corning 1292 , Mobile 28, And if you can get it Aeroshell #7. The Last two Greases are used in the Aviation Industry and if you can get them they work awesome. I'm sure the other Guy's will have some more common types and more so readily available. :)

Used Tri-Flow grease for years.. Most hobby shops should carry it. If you can't find it there try a bicycle shop.

For thrust bearings as well as just about any bearing, I use Conoco Dynalife GC-LB, EP Lithium Complex grease.  This came with the grease replacement tool "The Greaser" from Pete's Hobbies.  Though it contains lithium, the MSDS sheet shows it's lubricant is petroleum based.  So it should not be safe for rubber or plastic.  Before I knew about the petroleum contact, I had used it on some rubber and plastic without any ill affects.   But it still makes a litttle nervous to use it on

For rubber or plastic I used "plumber's grease".  The stuff I have now is from Danco and comes in a 0.5oz tube.  I did get some at Home Depot, but it had a definite petroleum smell and was not clear.  The Danco stuff is clear and no odor.

For special occassions I break out my Tamiya friction damper grease used on thier 1/10th scale F1 chassis.  This stuff is expensive and can be hard to find.  But it did wonders for the friction strap on the collective in my DX7.  I have a couple tubes left over my RC racing days.

I have tried the Tri-Flow synthetic grease.  I found that it did not seem to hold up well and became very thin and sticky after use.

On thrust bearings you want a high pressure grease that sticks to the ball races well. For this application I've found Motul Tech 300 to work excellent. I even used this stuff on my hard coat aluminum tail gears in my old N9/E9 tail gear box.

Thanks,

Matt

I second what Matt says about Motul. I started using it shortly after getting my initial N9. I have tried pretty much everything under the sun and I like this stuff the best. The Robbe "purple" grease is really good as well. If I remember correctly it is made by Bosch.

A side note- After my grease hunting quest, I ended up using factory Mercedes lube (not cheap btw).  When I first got the Motul, I was surprised to see that it is almost the exact same shade of green as the Merc lube. Not that looks mean anything, but it is are pretty hard to tell the difference between the two other than the Motul is about 1/4 the cost. Good stuff!

Matt, are you also using this grease on the dampers?  Just wondering if its plastic and rubber safe.

I generally use the Tri-Flow Synthetic Silicone grease with Teflon, it is an excellent grease and is 'High Tack' which sticks to the race ways and ball bearings and does'nt get dispersed by rotational forces as much as some greases.

I also use it to put a small lubrication layer on the dampers and spindle to allow the spindle to float.

Greg,

No, I use a white lithium grease for my dampers.
