N7 canopy mounts
« on: August 20, 2015, 04:06:50 AM »
I have an E5, N7 and an E7se, last one not built yet. On booth E5 and N7 I have some problems getting some of the key chain mounts off. They are stuck and needs to be fingled with for some time and then suddenly they come off. I have read here that it can be useful to put some grease on them, so I will try that.

On my N7 I was not pleased with the front U-mounts. When the engine is running there is a bad vibration sound from the canopy indicating that the front mounts were are not a tight fit. But I could not see any fix to this so I just accepted it as it was, although annoying sound. That it was vibration here I got confirmed quite quickly as the alloy studs for the front u-mounts came loose even if they were securely fixed with locktite. I had to secure them with red locktie to avoid them coming loose. Yesterday after some 40 flights one of the plastic front u-mounts were missing.

What is wrong here and is there any fix for this.

Best regards

My N7 has over 300 flights on the original "U" mounts.  When attaching them to the canopy you need to make sure that the key on the back fits securely into the canopy. You may have to trim some of the paint off the canopy opening as those mounting keys are made prior to painting.  Also when you tighten the bolt, remember you are securing these with a machine thread bolts into delrin plastic. Don't over tighten. A drop of CA on the threads never hurts either.

As for the tightness of the fit, once the canopy is on, is the nose of the canopy loose? can you move it up and down easily?

I used some two sided tape under my front mounts on my N7. It took out any vibration caused by the canopy. As for the keys being tight, when you ream the canopy do you adjust the location of the holes to get them lined up perfect? I take a little extra time when fitting my canopy and it pays off in the long run.

When the key chain mounts gets hard to remove I usually just put some oil and them.

This does not happen very often, but when it does... >:(
Thankfully fix is very easy.

Hi Chris!
Thank you for your reply. Yes I did put some CA in the threads and the key fit fine. I have not noticed any looseness of the nose of the canopy. But that there is play there is for sure because when I put a hand on the nose, the bad vibration sound goes away. And as you can see in this thread others have experienced the same problem.

Hi Ben!
Thank you for your reply. And thank you for recognizing the problem. But I don't understand how you used the double sided tape. Can you please explain a litte closer?

first thing to check is that they are properly engaged and not just slipped up on the end. mine does not move or make any noise at all. in fact, mine are sometimes hard to pull off because they grab so well. I use CA glue on my screws like we use locktight on the heli, and I  have never had one start to back out yet, and I have hundreds of flights on my N7's.

again, first thing I would check is to ensure that they are properly engaged. it is very easy to quickly push it on and the channels not being pushed all the way towards the frame. does that make sense? you have get them "half" way engaged by not being sure that the post is 100% into the channel, not front and back way, but side to side way....that could surely cause a loose condition.

Hi Ben!
Thank you for your reply and explanation.
I gues you mean think double sided tape, not the servo/gyro fastening thick tape?

I put some drops of bearing oil on the mounts, and that fixed the problem! Thank you guys.

Since I lost one u-mount I have had to fly with just three mounts because I have to order them and nobody stocks Synergy in Norway, so it takes a bit of time to get parts. FastLad in England is the closest that stocks Synergy, but unfortunately their stock of parts are less than impressive, so I usually also have to order parts from USA.

But it seems to work fine with just three mounts. Actually the bad vibration sound is gone!

I personally would recommend flying without the canopy vs. flying with only 3 mounts. the canopy is likely rubbing the main gear when in flight and with the air pushing on it. just me though, I wouldn't want to risk something happening to my heli over the canopy.

Hi Mike
No the canopy is not rubbing the main gear, no marks in the canopy. I cannot fly for 3 weeks without canopy!

Lol... I find it difficult to fly without a canopy as well... I loose orientation easily without it. Several guys here do it.. Some say they prefer it off.. NOT me! Lol

I prefer it too. less cost in a crash :) once you fly without it for a while, it becomes second nature and its not a big deal.
