Align 815 and 855 servos
« on: August 20, 2015, 05:17:45 AM »
I was recommended by a fellow experienced flyer to use the new Align 815 and 855 servos in my new N7 as he had great experience with them. I took this as a good advice and bought them, they are also quite a bit cheaper than the Futaba BLS servos I otherwise considered. These new Align servos has impressive specifications on 22kgs on 0,07 sec overgoing the best Futaba BLS. But I now read on forums that there are some problems with some batches of these servos. But I understand the bad ones usually malfunctions when istalling them so they shall not have caused crashes. Do I have to worry about destroying my brand new juvel of a N7 due to the servos?

This conversation could get heated quickly... BUT since it seems to be coming up more and more often I wanted to offer my personal experience.

My hobby funds have never been expendable.  I have always had to sell one part to buy a new one.  Over the years I have gotten very lucky and not been burned too much by the more budget friendly components. I have purchased several sets of used electronics as well.

As my flight skills progressed I started noticing odd tendencies and behaviors I couldn't tune out.  On the advice of a friend, I tried a "better" tail servo and instantly my problem was gone.  Does that mean my tail servo was garbage? No, it did the job just fine for where I was then. But where I am now, it can't keep up. So here I am 2 years after building my beloved N7, I am buying a new tail servo.

Someone very recently told me something that struck a cord. " Buy cheap buy twice, buy quality buy once "

There are many brands of servos/ESCs/Motors/FBL etc to choose from and they all have their place.  The brands that have a superior product will charge more, but if you only have to buy it once, isn't it worth it in the long run?

I am sure your Align servos will do the job, they have been working thus far and you should have no lack of faith in them.  But when is the last time you heard MKS having a bad batch, or Futaba, or Outrage?

I have made the personal decision to go all Futaba or MKS. Both have proven reputations in the industry. Yes some MKS take an extra shim on the cyclics of the current Synergy models, but that's a 5 cent fix.

I've been burned many times over trying to save money. Any more I buy high quality no matter what it is - hobby related or not! Love my MKS servos.

I try to buy the best that I can afford, why? One crash because of bad servo, you now have spent enough to buy the better servos. I run BK 7001HV on the head and MKS for the tail, I did this on my e5 and they have been great, so I did the same on my e7se, I try to buy when sales over the internet, I saved about 50 bucks on my servos for my e7. But I don"t think you have the very best unless you are a rep or fly for a living. And we have labor day coming im sure there will be some sales over the internet. Good luck on your hunt

BK7001's are reliable and crash worthy. Also very competitively priced. For a few bucks more you can also get the brushless. I actual I prefer coreless. I do run the 8001's on my Urukay though. Specs for both are very respectable.

Hi Alan
Why do you prefer coreless over brushless? Brushless is far longer lasting and much less powerhungry.

Personal preference.  Typically they cost less and in the BK line the 7001 (or 7002) are faster.  Granted brushless do have greater life.  I can honestly say i typically don't own any servos over three years old and never had a coreless wear out.  Never had issues with being too power hungry either so again not a factor for me.
