N7 clutch ?
« on: October 09, 2015, 12:32:45 AM »
Difficult time starting my n7 w/105hz today. it seemed to just spin on the shaft without engaging anything. I kinda had to tilt the heli to get it to start. Is this a clutch issue..start shaft..or bearings or something?
Didn't really have time to take it apart. Though Id post first to get pointed in the right direction!!

No experience with the N7.. But when my N5C lost its shoe... I could hear a difference in flight when it began to go & couldn't figure it out.. And it didn't seem detrimental in sound so I continued to fly. It did seem to take a few seconds more to start her... Then a couple flights later one of the shoes came completely separated... Luckily nothing locked up, but I lost drive to the blades... I'd start an investigation step by step til I found the issue.

When you say "spin on the shaft" do you mean the starter shaft was spinning but the engine was not turning over? If so it sounds like your one-way bearing in the clutch might be sticking. Whether it's because of dirt, or grease, or whatever the needle bearings can get hung up and it will fail to engage the shaft properly. You might want to pull the clutch, soak it in alcohol and clean the one-way bearing out. Blow it dry with compressed air, then add a drop of light oil (not grease!) - I like to use tri flow.

+1 for Danny , you can also use automatic transmission fluid as well if you have that. Good luck.

That happened to my N7 with an OS91HZ. Turns out the crankshaft nut backed off enough for the fan hub to loosen. Check your hub.
