Servo casing breakage
« on: November 02, 2015, 12:13:07 AM »
I have long been uncomfortable with the method of mounting the servos direct to the frame without the grommets that are supposed to protect the servos.

After some 130 flights since my N7 was new this year I discovered that the throttle servo was loose. I thought the fixing screws had come loose, but closer inspection showed that one mounting plate of the servo had broken compleately off. And this on a high quality servo that was new with the aircraft.

I guess the best way to avoid this is to use full metal casing servos like I do with the other servos on my N7.

So why don't you install the grommets? I do and I think most of the guys do also.

+1  I always use the grommets where I can. Especially on a nitro.

I have not used the grommets because it is obvious in the manual that the servos are mounted without, so I tought it was supposed to be like that, especially for the swash servos that have to be very firmly mounted. Do you think I should put grommets on all servos?

I do not mount servos with grommets. I always hard mount mine. with that said, I have never had this happen. I would definitely look the machine over for a bad vibration somewhere.

I even hard mount mine on my gassers. never had an issue. vibrations can cause this. a high frequency vibration is likely.

With the mount broken like that I would also check for servo binding.

I have always used the grommets, on every Heli I have had.

For an electric heli I don't think grommets are necessary, on a Nitro the opposite, they are probably mandatory.

The servo grommets are always worth fitting whether nitro or electric, even though electric doesn't have the operational vibration from the I/C engine, vibrations cans still be present or manifest themselves at a later stage so it is always worth installing the grommets to protect the servos and keep them isolated.

I have always fitted the servo grommets on all my machines, nitro or electric. They are cheap insurance in protecting the servos. I would replace the servo case and install the grommets on all the servos.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Ross

I don't belive that. I never use them. Even on my gassers. Never had a servo failure through over 1000 flights on a nitro or gasser to date. The key is buying good servos to begin with.

I guess that if you use a servo with full metal casing it should not be so necessary to use grommets. I have Align 815's on the cyclic with full metal casings. On the other hand, you will of course save the servo of a lot of stress if you use the grommets. I will mount my throttle servo with grommets from now, but not my metal casing Aligns.

Why is there now mentions about this in the manual, where it is obvious that the servos are mounted without grommets?

If you mount a metal servo with out the grommets you will be putting any and all vibration in to the electronics of the servo. The servo electronics might not last that long.

Trioasb did you check for servo binding on the throttle?

Yes, no binding.

But WHY is there no mentioning of this in the manual, where it is obviuos that the servos are mountet without grommets?!
