Canopy Stiffness
« on: June 05, 2016, 05:19:59 PM »
Does anyone else have a canopy that is ultra stiff and a total PITA to get on/off? It has a quality feel to it but it just seems like it would make more sense to have it a bit flexible for ease of use no? TBH I don't struggle as much with a goblin canopy. Just wondering if it's just my canopy or?

Don't flex the canopy. I greased the inserts and pull them out to remove canopy.

It does get a bit more natural after practice.

Ok I'll give that a shot. Maybe some thumb screws might work better here.

I just take my time and latch one side at a time.

I don't think rushing and doing both sides at the same is an option.

For such an awesome helicopter I have to say the canopy removal/install is terrible. Especially for such a small piece that is removable. Should be thumb screws or magnets if its going to be such a stiff piece.

i don't understand why people are having issues with this canopy system. IMHO it is the easiest I have used yet. you simply pull the male end of the quick releases out of the canopy, slide it up (no flexing needed at all), line the holes up with the female side of the mounts, and then insert the male end of the mount. its really that easy.

Have you tried a protos v2 canopy? My N7 with booya quick release in the rear is extremely easy and is a close second to the protos magnet type. Removing the quick release from the canopy on the 766 every time to me is more of a work around and seems pretty cheese.

Yes I replaced my N7 quick release with booya.. I think they are a little smoother and a touch shorter making them easier to insert. My stock ones broke apart a few times too.

I don't use magnetic mounts, i have had canopies come off using them before. don't trust them at all. yes, i have used rcbooya mounts though, and they are nice. but the stock mounts seem to be fine on the synergy helis IMO.

Yeah I hear you on magnetic mounts I have the same reservations but they are stronger than I thought.

As far as the stock quick releases go.. they do work fine yes but in my experience and from experiences of others in the club they just don't hold up and just aren't  as smooth.

When I said take my time, I don't mean it takes me ten minutes to put it on.  I'm just more deliberate with it than with my others.

I use a q-tip and swab some grease inside of the receptacles on the heli.  Also, if you haven't, you'll want to use some light oil in the male connectors on the canopy.  They'll work much smoother.

+1

the grease inside the female connector and the light oil on the male connector makes a huge difference.

Definitely some fair points there and I'm sure it helps. I find it silly that I'd have to add my canopy mounts to my grease/oil/lube routine on the helicopter. It really should be one of those things thats never thought about on the model and just works. It isn't.Thanks for the pointers though guys.

It's not really something that has to be done very frequently.  ANY moving parts that have metal to metal contact surfaces work better with lubrication and will have a longer useful life.

Yeah I get that. Pretty familiar with lubrication, heh. I just think for a +$1k kit it should be an automatic out of mind thing.

Chris
I was fitting my canopy on the 806 yesterday and the front mounts seemed tight, which of course they should be. I'll try  the recommended lub thing as well. Does the canopy begin to fit better with more use? I elongated the holes a little  to fit in the pins.
The white grommets are the best I have ever worked with. No struggle while installing these into the canopy.
