N5C clutch issue
« on: August 22, 2016, 10:00:39 AM »
I am having a clutch issue that I can't figure out.  My N5C with OS 55 HZ-R was working great.  I had some engine issues and replaced both front and rear bearings with OS OEM bearings. They dropped in after engine heating and fully seated without any issues.

I reassembled and flew.  Noted some roughness in the clutch rotation.  I saw metal fragments from the clutch being too high and rubbing on the bell.

The clutch needs to be about 1mm lower.  Cant figure out what the problem is.  The clutch stack was full seated and there is no play in the shaft once the nut is tightened.  The clutch is level with the bell.  I  attached some pictures.  Do you have any idea or suggestion to resolve?

Thanks so much for the help!

Can you send or post side view pictures of your Fan/clutch assy mounted to the engine. I want to also know if your installing the black washer before you install the stack to the motor.

Strange that it's just worn in one spot on the clutch.

It almost appears that the motor and upper clutch bell assy aren't properly aligned. My question for you is, when this was all mounted, could you spin with your fingers the start shaft and if so did you feel any drag? I've seen this before. And that was the issue.
Can you also verify you do have the washer (that comes with motor) mounted underneath the fan/clutch assy. ?

Also I would like to see pics of the fan shroud, especially the top were it sits under the clutch bell. Also check that there are no rub marks on the inside of the shroud that the cooling fan blades may be contacting. A lot of times if there is contact especially prolonged contact the blades themselves will break off. Just inspect closely. Let us know..

Had this before. My start shaft was oversized. Compared to one I had replaced. Luckily I didn't throw it out right away. I bought a new shaft and everything fell into place

I would like to thank everyone for their input.  I have found my issue and am sharing  to help others prevent issues with the clutch / Bell Clearance.

1.   I found that the hex adapter on the start shaft had slipped slightly that created play in start shaft / bell assembly.  This caused the bell to be positioned about 1 – 2 mm lower and allowed the top edge of the clutch to rub on the bell.

Other factors to be careful about that could also cause issues:

2.   Ensure that the cooling fan / hub are fully seated on the crankshaft and there is no play on the crank shaft before tightening.  Pressure on the crankshaft outwards can ensure that there is no play. Don’t forget the engine washer.

3.   Make sure that the front engine bearing is fully seated if it is replaced.

4.   Check that the fan shroud is not rubbing on the fan or the engine.  Some mild shaping may be indicated.  Carefully check the front – rear position of the shroud with the fan.  This can be adjusted as needed by sliding in the provided holes.

Once fully assembled, you can shine a flashlight and check alignment of the clutch to ensure that it is not hitting the bell.  Lastly, don’t forget to oil the clutch one way bearing.

The N5C is now running great.  I hope this is helpful!
