Synergy 516 gearing.

I’m running low head speed. 2100, 2300, 2450. Talon 90 is hot after 4.5min flight. So is scorpion motor. All stock gearing. What is a good gear setup? I’ve heard 17t pinion and 21t tail pulley . Can’t find a 21t tail pulley though.

There is an optional 18t tail pulley that is designed for lower head speeds of 2200 or less. https://www.mattbotos.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4_42&products_id=2305

I am running 17t pinion with the Scorpion 4020-1350 but am using a HobbyWing 120 V4 ESC. Both are very warm at lower head speeds, around 175 deg F after a 4.5 min flight but I think that is still in the "normal" temp range.

Is this with the 4020-1350KV Scorpion motor?

For those RPM's you will need the 16T pinion. Ideal rpm with the 16T is around 2400.  Running the 18T with those RPM's is putting more strain on the electronics... it's lugging around quite a bit. At those speeds, you'd also benefit from running the optional 18T tail pulley to speed it up a little... 20T is stock.

One last thing, how hot? Hot is subjective. Internal motor temps of 150-160F are completely acceptable, and that will feel quite hot to the touch. The ESC will throw an error code if you run it too hot.

I haven’t put a temp sensor on it. Just by touch. I’ll look into measuring the temp accurately. I’m touching it for a second and it’s uncomfortable. Your right hot is subjective. Just don’t want to fry my motor/esc prematurely. And I should factor in the environmental temp. It’s been 90+ here. I let it cool for 20min then go back up. Thanks! I can’t complain, I have two 516’s setup the same and they fly great. I’m just new to the custom heli world. I’ll get a temp gun .
