Help me build a 516
« on: December 04, 2019, 12:18:14 PM »
Hi. Getting back into the hobby after a long deployment. Please help me build my next bird. This is what I have so far:

1. Motor: Xnova Lightning 4020-1350kv motor
2. BK servos all the way around

What ESC do I need to run this without it getting hot? I read that the talon 90 gets hot. So far, I am looking at Scorpion Tribunus 120. I have read that it needs to be over the max amps of the motor to run well and have headroom. I have seen a few ESCs with lower amperage for BEC, and so far the highest BEC I could find was actually on the Talon 90.

Go with a 120, if you decide to stretch it later on. HW120 or the 120 tribunus is fine. I got by with a 90 even stretched but I’m not that aggressive. With the bk servos I believe you need to shim them. Mks 9767 were my go to for that bird. And I had the mks hbl 980 tail servo on mine. Rail 516 mains and rail86 tails. Stock gears HS is 2200 2350 2500.

Btw that motor is a great pick I heard it’s a power house. So I would go with a 120 esc to get the most out of it. Make sure your bks are the minis

I would agree, the HW 120 v4 is an excellent choice. I have this in my 516 stretch and it stays very cool and the internal BEC is excellent.

Agree, either hobbywing platinum 120 V4
or tribunus 120.
My 516 has the xnova 4020-1350 paired with HW 120 V4.
Servos are mks 9767 and futaba bls276sv.

Consider fitting the optional carbon fibre boom as well, it helps with getting good centre of gravity while no problems getting canopy on over the battery. Lipos around 4200-5000mah work fine, i haven't tried anything smaller.

Did you have to modify the Futaba tail servo to fit?

Thank you for the responses, gentlemen. Do I need a higher BEC rated for more than 10A?

As long as the tail servo is a “standard size” servo your good

The bec in the HW120 is fine, I use it on my e5s 626. I set my bec at 6v. You can set it at 6, 7.4, or 8v. You’ll be fine. I put a scorpion guard in mine just in case. But you’ll be fine with the built in bec with the HW or tribunus. Just keep your HS in the right range with your gearing.

From experience, the bec in the HW120 V4 should be fine, mine is set to 8.0v.
I'd expect similar from a Tribunus.

Safe to say I’ve sold more HW120’s for the 516 than Scorpion. I’m actually running a Kolibri 90 on my stretch 516. The HW is bulletproof.

Cheers
