516 setup for lower head speeds sport flying and mellow 3D?
« on: December 12, 2019, 08:48:24 AM »
I was thinking of building an E5 this winter, but the flying field behind my house is a bit pinched (a 450 has plenty of room, Align 500 OK but starts to get close to the tree lines).  So if I understand correctly the 516 should be OK.

I am interested in a setup that will allow for lower head speeds and longer flight times (6S).  My flying style is primarily sport flying, with some very modest 3D.

Any suggestions on motor size, battery size, ESC, etc. would be really appreciated.  Also cost-effective servo selection under assumption that I won't be doing any really crazy 3D maneuvers.

Put a 120esc with a 4020-1350 motor and use 16pinion and a 18t tail. HS should be around 2000-2300. You can even stretch it to a 556 with that setup. I was getting about 5min with my stretch

Oh and a 4500mAh battery is perfect CG on that bird
Use mks 9767 for cyclic and a mks hbl 980 on the tail. It’s the perfect setup including what I said above! That is a smooth bord

If you want to run lower head speed, you are better off stretching to the 556. However the 516 flies well at lower HS also for sport flying. I would recommend a lower KV motor rather than gearing down in order to achieve the HS you want. This is more efficient and will get you better flight times. Scorpion just for example offers a motor in the 1100-1200KV range that is a match for this size airframe.

I went with a 1200kV motor and 5000mAh batteries, ~2350RPM. TX timer is set for 6 minutes and lands with 3.8V per cell.

Upright circuits and stall turns mostly.

Schmavs, which pinion do you use with 1200kv?

What throttle % do you have too get 2350 in that config?  Does it need 100%?

I run a non stretch, with the 16T pinion, sped up tail, 4500mah Pulse 6 cell packs, with a receiver pack and a HW 120 V4....I run 1700, 1900, 2100....2100 is a bit too high for the pinion, but I don't run it there that much.  I'm easily getting 10 minutes of big air and dabbing into 3D, so light 3D.  I'm using an Xnova 4020-1000kv motor.

I chose that setup due to being able to go higher than 6 cell.  If I were to do it again, I'd not consider going more then 6 cell, get a different ESC, one with a BEC, as I'm on the heavy side for a 516,   6 pounds, 14 ounces.
