Upper Jesus bolt "floats"
« on: June 20, 2020, 09:57:34 AM »
My 696 upper Jesus bolt floats when tight. The bolt is tight because the nut bottoms out on the shank. It's like the counterbore is a tiddybit too deep.

I checked the bolt against the dead 696 (moment of silence please...) and the shank length is spot on in comparison.

Is this cause for concern?

Should I shim it?

Edit: looked at the dead 696 and it is the same way. Maybe by design?

The jesus bolts have a shoulder for a reason. So yes they may “float”.
The Jesus bolt on the head block typically does not. Should not be an issues though.

Page 42 of the manual (Main Head Assembly, Head Installation) has a note addressing this very subject.  Please see attachment.
