Clutch liner
« on: March 18, 2012, 11:17:44 PM »
Just wondering if another brand clutch liner will work?  Don't feel like waiting a week to get the Synergy one. Maybe 600n or 700n, Outrage velocity 50 or 90?  These are available locally.

Basically I've had a hot start and the liner was eaten in 3 seconds while I was in shock holding the head real hard until realizing I need to pull the fuel line. Setup the Vbar incorrectly and it looks like the governor was on right off the bat.  Now I realized my mistake and fixed it in the software but the only part that needed replacement is a clutch liner.  Everything else seemed to survive like clutch bell, clutch disc etc.  Lots of clean up and had to take the whole thing apart. Man, do I feel stupid and angry at myself for doing this.

Belcom,

Brother, you don't need to feel that way,I had it happen at a fun fly with a crowd once ;) Everyone in this hobby has had something as simple as that happen. Don't sweat it dude!! those clutch liners will work just fine!!! I have run align ones since I had a stock pile of them. Just make sure you check your clearences and be sure to get the excess off.  Good luck and if you need anything just give us a shout!  ;) Take Care

Well, thanks for the kind words Kevin. I've been into it for 2 years now and actually never had any mishaps of any kind because I always make sure and double check things.  I followed instructions from someone on this setup but it turned out the instructions were not complete and having not run the nitro governor on the Vbar before I was not fully understanding how things worked. Which got me into trouble.  So next time I will take extra care to learn every little thing and completely understand  it before actually trying it whatever it happens to be.

Never replaced the clutch liner.  So what is the best way to do it?  Apply some CA or some other type of glue and where? All along the clutch bell wall?

clean the old liner from the clutch bell. then you want to insert your new liner and mark it where you are going to cut the exxsess off. Do Not Overlap The Seems!! Next i have done this part 2 different ways.

1.) Clean your clutch off, then apply 1.5 - 2.0 wraps around it with electrical tape, This will set the clearence yo need, Let it dry completly cleaning any residual residue.

2.) go to home depot or lowes, and buy a piece of PVC pipe one size bigger than the inner diameter of the clutch housing. now the PVC pipe can be 1 inch long, then cut a slit in it from one edn to another, when you squeez it now it will contract and put it in the clutch bell just like you would using the other steps. let it dry and clean off the residue and you are good to go. Good Luck

I picked up Lynx Heavy Duty clutch liner Part# LX0086 (for Trex 700n) and it fits perfectly.  You do have to trim it of course but the height and thickness is perfect.  Did 2 layers of electrical tape for snug fit. Now off to put everything back together.

Belcom,

The biggest thing to watch with clutch liners is the clearance gap.
Too much clearance and the clutch shoes will break, too little clearance and there is constant drag when starting. The electrical tape method should work fine.

Thanks,

Matt
