A golf cart isn't per say necessary but is really nice to have. Although there are flight line carts that go up and down the line to take you to other areas of the flight line, a golf cart of your own is nice to run to other sites or camper area once you start making friends =D I recommend renting a golf cart. I didn't for two years. Last year was not bad because it wasn't too hot. However the year before that it was NASTY hot and miserable having to drag your chairs everywhere to sit and walking in the heat and humidity. I believe this year will be like that if the weather so far is any indication. It's nice on Friday night during Helipalooza and on Saturday during dinner and prizes to just pull up the cart and relax.
As far as the flight line goes, all the areas will let you see good action because guys fly everywhere. That being said, if you want to be closest to center stage and the vendors you have to get there early in the week and set up your canopy/table to mark your spot. There are certain areas that only sponsors and vendors can be but they are marked with signs. After that marking its just kinda set up where you can although everyone always keeps it in a straight line. I've been all the at the far end of the field before and it was fun still.
I personally am staying at the Holiday Inn which is right across the street from the Fairfield. Not a bad area to stay, I'm sure you'll be seeing many other pilots in that area and in your hotel. Good restaurant with hot skimpy dressed girls right down the road from there too.
