The large collar on the pinion is also there by design to stop the gear from rising too high. Interference between the main gear and pinion collar is normal operation, nothing needs to be fixed. Grease your main gear for the smoothest operation.

Thanks for chiming in. Just to be perfectly clear, what is an acceptable gap between the collar and the main gear?  (touching, or 0.25mm, or more)? There seems to be some minor variance between models. It would be good to know if adding a shim would help reduce the normal collar/gear rubbing.  Or if its completely un-nessessary.

On both of mine, collar is a little over 1.0mm above main gear.

My OWB came installed backwards. Or at least in reverse of what the manual says.  Instead of reversing the hub, I just turned the main gear over.  As it turns out, that is a better, stronger orientation for the hub anyway.  Without any shims, I had may be 0.25mm between the main gear and the collar.  It looked like Ross's picture.

Yesterday I installed the washer from a glow plug.  Now there is gap slightly over 1mm.  However, considering the upward forces from the slanted gears, that gives the main gear a lot of room to travel before it hits the collar.  That added flex, under load, cannot be good for the main gear.  Between rubbing a little off the top shoulder of the main gear and the gear possibly breaking, I'll take the former.   The washer is coming out.

I desiged the one way hub symmetrical so that you can flip the sleeve around and have the same main gear position. I would need to take measurements on your hub and main gear to determine if it is out of tolerance. it very well cold be main gear thickness and not the hub itself. Either way, this is not a problem.

The pinion should rest against the lower bearing support in order to cancel downward helical force. If the pinion is set too high you could potentially damage your motor bearings. The large collar on the pinion is also there by design to stop the gear from rising too high. Interference between the main gear and pinion collar is normal operation, nothing needs to be fixed. Grease your main gear for the smoothest operation.

Guys, please do not attempt pressing the one way out, there is no reason to do this. There is no "correct" direction for the hub, I will be placing a note in the online manual. In order to keep confusion to a minimum, I will make sure the factory presses them all in the same direction.

I hope that clears things up.

Thanks,

Matt

You don't need to push the bearing out... The manual is being updated to state this.... We have all had to install our hubs upside down relative to the manual, it works fine. In fact it makes the mesh even better.
