E5 ESC Help Please?
« on: December 29, 2012, 10:10:58 PM »
Hi All,

I bought my first Synergy....an E5.  Beautiful heli, but I'm having trouble with ESC selection.  Castle came out with the Talon 90 ESC, which I'd really like to use-  being it has the 20a BEC built in.  Question is, I intend on running the E5 with a 6S setup and the Scorpion 4025 1100Kv motor.

Will the Talon 90 handle this?

Here's the link for it: http://www.castlecreations.com/products/talon.html

Also, which pinion should I go with?

Thanks in advance  :)

The Talon 90 is a bit small for the E5.  I'm running a CC 120HV.  Take a look at this thread.  http://synergyrchelicopters.com/forum/index.php?topic=1128.0

Welcome to the Synergy family, if you need further assistance please let us know.

Ahh nuts!

I was hoping it would be a match made in heaven, especially with the price of the Talon.  It just doesn't have the headroom.

Welp, looks like I'll be going with the 120HV and Western Robotics Bec.  Thought I could save some dough, but no point in risking a nice bird to save a fraction of the price.

Thanks for the reply.

Anyone know what the status of Ryder is?

Better to find out now than later,  later would make the CC 120 even more expensive.  Sorry, I missed your pinion question in the first post.  The pinion depends on what head speed your are looking for.  Happy to be of assistance.

Man, I really wish I didn't have to spend so much money on an ESC for a 550 running 6S.  Is the Castle 100 with a separate BEC enough?  Just seems like it should be, but if this thing is pulling 120-150 peak amps that has me concerned.

Looking at a Trex 550DFC, it comes with the 600mx (1240kv) and a Talon 90.  Granted it swings 520mm mains, but it's tugging around 5000mah packs.

I was trying to keep this affordable.  Is there another motor that would pair better with a Castle Ice 100 possibly?  I don't need mind blowing 3D.  As it stands right now, a 12S and 6S set up are going to cost close to the same.

Hobbywing 100a is perfect. I run one on my E5 and so does my buddy Wes. Add a phase sensor and they are ideal for FBL governors.

I do run a bec. The stock Hobbywing bec is ok but I wouldn't trust it. Could use a backup guard.

The Castle 100 should be fine.  I ran that on my T550 with no issues and plan to run it on my E5.  The Castle BEC Pro is a less expensive option to the Hercules Super BEC.

I would stick with the CC 120HV it is a proven solution with Scorpion HKIII 4025  1100KV.  "Should be fine" solutions generally mean they are untested.  Just my 2 cents

I agree. It's better to have extra head room for spikes in a case like this than just ample enough.

Thanks for all of the feedback here.

I didn't budget for the 120HV esc and it stopped me in my tracks when I saw the outlay to get the E5 airborne on 6S.

I did take a look at the Hobbywing 100amp ESC and I think I will go with that and a BEC.  I have had good luck with Hobbywing in the past and it can take peak amperage a bit better than the Ice 100.  I don't like Castle Creations to begin with.

I don't do hard 3D.  I am a sport flyer and take it easy on the motor.  I'll make sure that the ESC is mounted in a place with decent airflow.  Looking forward to the first flight.  It's a very nice helicopter with everything I have wanted from size, to quality, to innovation.

I have 100 flights on my E5 on 6s with a Hobbywing 100a and a rx pack. Not a single issue. In fly sport and big air. My buddy Wes has flown harder 3d on my rig and it held up just fine.

You won't have a problem with a Castle Ice 100/Castle BEC Pro.  The Talon 90 is actually designed for a 550 size heli, but without the proper airflow it could overheat and shut down.  The 100/BEC Pro will give you more power than the Talon 90 provides to both the motor and servos so you should have plenty of safety margine with that combo.  If you decide to run a Talon make sure you provide plenty cooling air and you will most likely never have any problems either.  My next E5 will be a CC Ice 100/BEC Pro as I've run that setup on a couple of older Trex 600Es and a 550E without ever having an issue.

At first I wanted the talon also but went with the 120hv. Glad I did but same as you I didn't plan on spending that much.  Sure I will be glad later down the road though.
