Bell crank assembly N5C

Hi,

I have read some previous posts on this subject, but I just wanted to clarify a few things. The shims are only used if there is lateral movement of the pitch and aileron bell cranks. There should be no lateral movement of the the elevator bell cranks as they will be pressed and tightened together against the frame. If a shim has to installed I take it is is the last thing to go on shaft before you put the screw in? Last question, if you do need to file the threads of the balls of the bell crank is the best thing to do to remove the balls from the bell crank first and put a nut on the ball and then file?

I removed the balls from the bell cranks to file them, but I guess you can do it either way.

As for the shims, as long as there is no binding and no play, you are good to go!.

If you need a shim you can put it any where from the side frame to the bolt. I needed 2 on mine and have one between the frame and ele crank on the out side of the frame and one between the ele crank and the Ale crank.

If you loosen the set screw on the Ele crank between the frames you can adjust the amount of shim you need side to side. So if you have 3 shims on the left side you can adjust it so you can have one shim on one side and two on the other on the outer parts of the frames.

Hi,

I will usually dry assembly everything to assess the need for any shims when building that particular assembly, this allows me to get everything ready and get shims in the right order. I've usually only ever needed a couple of shims so one either side in between the outer bellcrank and spacer and outer elevator bellcrank. Just my preference to keep everything spaced evenly.

If you need to remove some of the exposed threads from the ball on the elevator bellcrank then it can be done either with them fitted to the bellcrank using a dremel or a good method i found was to remove them and thread the ball into a M3 nylock nut and then grind/file the exposed threads. This keeps the remaining threads sufficient andalso when you remove the nylock nut it will clean off any burrs which remain. Just be aware when you thread them back into the bellcrank to take care as you have now ground away the tapered section of the thread which allows the thread to find its thread path.
