Strange noise
« on: May 27, 2013, 08:17:53 PM »
My E7 started making a noise this week and I'm  having a heck of a time tracking it down.  I replaced all three bearings for the main shaft and the main shaft.  I thought it was the motor but if I pull the main shaft and gears and run just the motor, it's smooth as silk.  I pulled the TT transmission out of the frame and it's perfect.  The TT gears in the tail are fine.  I pulled the tail boom off and spun the TT with my drill and there was no vibration in the tail.  I'm kind of lost at this point.  I shot a short video today in hopes that someone else has maybe heard this same sound...

Watched the video and definitely a strange sound to my ears. Have you noticed your main blades coming out of track at all? Regardless though have you checked and changed your main head dampers and checked your thrust bearings for wear?  Have you greased/re-greased the thrust bearings in the tail and head?

Totally a guess but from just listening to the video once one guess I would have is that something is worn and putting excess pressure on another area so in trying to think of the more consumable items to go through first.

How is your gear mesh?
You might try taking the main and tail blades off and spin it up in the driveway.  Also try doing that with the head removed.  Then removed the tail box.  Just a process of elimination.  I have not heard that sound to date. Keep us posted.

Cheers

I've basically ripped the entire thing apart and now I'm going to be putting it back together, adding one item at a time, and spooling it up each time to try and find it.  I did find one bad radial bearing in one of the main blade grips but all the other bearings look good.

Whenever i've had strange noises in the past its been related to the motor, motor bearing/counter bearing, pinion, or main gear.

What condition is your pinion in? They do wear and this can make strange noises. Same goes for the main gear. You might want to just pull the motor apart and feel the bearings by hand. They can sometimes appear to be running smoothly with no external loads.

My E7 made similar noise but I can't tell by your recording if it was the same. Mine was kind of an oscillating minor grinding type thing. It came and went. Some days bad, some days almost nonexistent. I replaced the main gear and auto rotation bearing assembly, been fine ever since.

One of the things I did this weekend was tear the motor apart.  It did have a bad bearing.  Actually, the retaining clip for one of the bearing seals was just sitting on top of the bearing, not attached.  That little clip is exactly what destroyed the Hacker that this motor replaced.  Anyway, after replacing the bearing, I'm still getting the noise.  It's a Compass motor and, I have to say, I'm getting great service from Mike Janakowski at Prostar hobbies.  When I first started running that motor a couple of weeks ago, I was seeing up to around 5600 watts.  The last 10 flights, it was only hitting about 4600, and I was flying the same as before.  On Friday, I had sent him an email and told him I thought my motor was making a strange noise.  After tearing it down the other night and finding that the motor sounded smooth, I sent him another email and told him I didn't think it was the motor, after all.  He sent me a reply and told me he wanted to replace it, anyway, because based on the data it seems that it does have an issue.  It's so nice dealing with guys like Mike and Matt!

Kevin, I did lube the thrust bearings with Boto lube.  I'm not sure what they were lubed with before.  When I first got the helicopter I just pulled the bearings out of the grips and checked that the thrust bearings were greased and then put them back together.

Anthony, the pinion does actually kind of look like crap and I had wondered if that was my problem but then kind of dismissed it.  I was thinking of going to a 12T pinion, anyway, because I want to run a little lower head speed.  I think I'm going to go ahead and order one of the hardened pinions.

Thanks for all the replies guys!
Rodney

My E7 is making that exact same noise.  I have ruled out the electronics or governor.  Time to replace something.  I have bearings and a new torque tube and torque tube bearings on the way.

Is it possible the problem is in the head?

Here's a video of mine which sounds very similar to Rodney's.  Go figure.  Any thoughts are welcome.  I also made a test with the tail disconnected and the noise is the same.  Definitely in the head or main bearings or motor. :-\

Sounds like a main bearing versus a motor bearing. When you say you disconnected the tail what exactly did you disconnect? I would pull the tail and torque tube completely and run it up without blades. It does not sound like a head problem. To me anyway.

Listened to that again. It could also be the one way. Pull that apart and lube with some light oil.

Hadn't thought of that Alan.  Will do.
I have new main bearings coming and will replace them as well as a main shaft.
