Is my main shaft assembled correctly? Missing something?
« on: July 15, 2013, 04:53:16 PM »
I have the boss on the jesus bolt collar (320-411) facing upward into the second bearing block and the boss on the pinch collar (610-150) facing downward above the first bearing block.

With the two shouldered bolts holding the spur gear and the collar in place, there is a small gap between the bottom of the auto hub sleeve and the third bearing block. Without the pinch collar loose I can push the whole main shaft assembly down about 2 mm until the auto hub sleeve rests on the third bearing block. Is this normal? With the bottom of the auto hub sleeve contacting the third bearing block, there is a space between the jesus bolt collar and the bottom of the second bearing block. Am I missing something?

When the pinch collar is tightened are you pulling up on the main shaft? If so that should remove any free play. Are you bearings assembled in the proper orientations?
The top bearing should insert from the top of the block. If it isn't you could be pushing the bearing downwards out of the block.

PM me if you would like a phone consult.

Cheers
Alan

Yeah - something isn't together correctly.  Neither of mine have any gap above the third bearing block.  Look at page 2 of the assembly manual and see if one or more of your bearing blocks are upside down.

I talked to Mark.  All blocks are in correctly from what I can tell and with the pinch collar tightened he has no play.  But yes for the life of me I cannot figure why the space at the bottom.  I did just text him and asked about the delrin shims to be sure those are in place.  His main gear and spur gear alignment is fine.

MyRCode,  exactly which parts did you have to replace because of the crash?  Did you check to insure that the three bearings in the main shaft support block were all good (rotated freely)?  The reason for my bearing question is that if the inner race of the bearing has been pushed out of alignment it could create the gap(though the chance is remote).  Easy to check because the bearing will not rotate freely if this is the case.  My first guess would have been bearing block upside down next would have been the delrin shims but this has been covered.  Grasping at straws .........

I had to replace the main shaft, feathering spindle, and one way bearing assembly (bought a completely new set with the sleeve, assembly, shims).  Before re-assembly I checked the head bearings - the new feathering spindle spun freely in all the bearings.  Did the same thing with the main shaft...inserted the new shaft and all the bearings spun smoothly.

Ralph from fblrotors.com is sending me down a frame setup with the bearing blocks, main shaft, and OWB assembly that doesn't have a gap so I can compare it to mine, so hopefully I'll know what's missing by next week.

Could it be as simple as one of the main blocks is bent? Have you taken them out and checked that they are square? The crash damaged alot in the head. Main bearing blocks are next in the chain to absorb damage.

If that was already ruled out and I missed it I apologize. I only skimmed the original post and responses.

I didn't even think to check the bearing blocks.  I'll pull them out and see what they look like.
