servo thoughts
« on: December 05, 2013, 10:56:31 AM »
I'm gathering parts little by little, and taking advantage of some holiday sales and so forth.  I've got a motor, esc, and FBL unit already.  I've been sorta in the air about servos.

I'm thinking about these for the cyclic:

and this for the tail:

Any thoughts on these?  I was thinking of going with the Futaba 255 and 256 route, but see they are discontinued, and from what I have read searching through the net, that the links above are the replaements.  Let me know what you think.  Just want some thoughts before checking out my cart as they are on the pricey side.

Thanks!

Yes pricey but great servos.  I have two sets of this combo and yes they are the replacements for the BLS255/256 combination.
I have one set in one of my E7's now.  Another will be going into the N7 very soon... :-)

Other options include MKS and Protek.  I have some proteks in my E5 Stretch.  They work fine.  MKS in another E7 but have yet to put any flights on them...  I know Mr. Burberry loves the MKS :-)

Cheers

Alan

Please report back when you get a flight or some flights on MKS's and how they compare to your other Futaba's please, Alan.  I am not particular in any brand.  I have Savox in my E5 and love them.  I am just wanting to try different brands to see what I like, if I can tell any differences or not.  With the holiday discounts I have thought of splurging a little and trying out some Futabas.   8)

I have flown savox also. Both regular and HV.
They are okay but I can feel the difference. The one E7 had Savox HV'S at one point. The Futabas definitely made a difference.  I felt they were just a bit more locked in and they do center better. Plus the savox are power hungry. I have checked the amp draw and it was a good 25% greater with the Savox..
Will let you know about the MKS.

What about the Proteks Alan? I see that Greggor has a new set out. But I wondered how much they draw each flight.

Haven't looked at the numbers on those.. Only a few flights on the stretch thus far.   Next time I get a chance to fly it I will check the log.
Rob may be able to comment.  He uses Proteks exclusively I believe.

How are you checking the amp draw?  Are you just putting a meter in series with one of the servo wires and then moving the servo back and forth?  Any pics if your test setup?

I have read that the Savox can be power hungry.  I use a Pulse 2550mah rx lipo but can get many flights on it before I have to recharge it.  Course I'm just doing some forward flight, nothing 3D or such.

I am using Jeti ESC's with built in BEC's.  I get real time logging directly into the DS-16 radio.  Logging includes amp draws on both the ESC and BEC.

I was in the same boat, regarding those Futaba servos and the new ones that replace them.  I ended up going a less expensive route and bought the RJX HV servos.  Haven't flown them yet but I've read a lot of good reviews including from a couple guys here, including Chris.

I have RJX servos on 3 birds and my N7 will have them all around including throttle.

Just be careful with becs. They have an unusually fast ramp up time that doesn't play nice with becs.  If you have one not initialise on power up just cycle the power. Never an issue in flight and they arent overly power hungry.

Are you saying that for the RJX servos??  Just to be clear, is why I'm asking.  I'm planning on a 2c lipo for my electonics, no BEC, so it matches my E5 and I don't have to buy more parts. :)

Oh, I just ordered those servos btw.  Thank goodness for TowerHobbies discount!   ;D

Yes I was commenting on the RJX servos being BEC harsh.

Straight 2s lipo when ever possibe is my preferred method. Although I have strayed from that a few times recently.

I have the Align version of the Savox HVs in one E7se (BL700H/BL750H) and the Outrage Torq in another (I believe that MKS makes them) and even though the Torqs specs are a little slower, they certainly feel more locked in than the Alugn/Savox do.  And a flight pack certainly does last longer on the Torqs!

Yes, the Torq servos are made by MKS. Besides being re-branded by MKS, the differences are Titanium coated gears on the Torq's vs Titanium gears on the MKS. This makes for the marginal price difference.

The Torq's are in a different league to the Align/Savox as you pointed out.

Cheers,
Mark
