Headspeed and pinion
« on: January 08, 2014, 08:12:04 PM »
Hey guys

I have the stock 12T pinion installed and the 14T in a bag.

I'm thinking about putting the 14T on to run a 2200-2300HS? i've heard 2200-2300 is a really good headspeed to run, with the 12T my CC GOV is limiting me to 2100 and won't let me go any higher

Ice 120HV v2, hkiii-4025-1100kv, 6s batteries.

For 2200-2300 I run the 13t.  Very efficient setup.  The 12t is pushing it for 2200-2300.  14t is okay but not optimal unless you are also wanting to push it to 2400 or better.

Cheers

On the E5 with 96mm tail blades, the optimal tail RPM is often cited as between 9,500 and 10,000rpm.  So, with the stock 4.0:1 tail ratio, the head speed would equal 2,375 and 2,500rpm.  With the optional 4.5:1 tail ratio, you would be looking at 2,111 to 2,222rpm head speed.  Plug the 12T, 13T, and 14T into the MrMel HS calculator, and figure out which one will work best with your system.

I run mine (13t) with the Scorpion 1100kv at 2300 most of the time with the stock tail gearing.  No problems with the tail holding at 2300.  2200 is used only for buzzing around and big air so again the lower tail RPM is not a problem.  If you do choose to run a lower HS using the 12t pinion then you will need the 4.5:1 for sure.

Cheers

I was running 14T stock tail ratio at 2650 then dropped to 13T and to 2350 . It flew great at 2650 just caused the motor to get hotter than I liked and also was pulling too many Amps. I didn't see myself liking 2350 but after looking at the numbers and talking with Clint I swapped out gears and gave it a try, man I love it and the E5 doesn't seem angry anymore but still makes tons of power.
