Try giving the one way in the starter shaft a good soaking of WD-40.  I used silicone spray lube on mine and that cured the problem.  WD-40 should also work unless the OWB is completely toast...

Advice on starter.
« Reply #16 on: January 28, 2014, 02:30:37 PM »
OK gents, I have just received a Sullivan starter, didn't buy the wand because the Sullivan price was outrages and its a fixed shaft that Matt advises against. So first thing it doesn't actually come with a bracket that I see everyone with for the battery. Just fabricated one out of aluminium so problem over.
I managed to get hold of a Hirobo 6mm shaft starter from my local store, ques:

Are these simple Hirobo wands designed to push in the rubber spinner cup??

Assume it is but there are 2 O rings on the collet, it seems to fit better in the rubber cup without, anyone else use them?

No OWB on this shaft, dont see it as a big deal as there is also one on the Heli, any potential problems?

I can use 3 or 4 cell lipo's whats the concensus??

This starter wand only cost me 7 Euros, it was out of a Hirobo kit and will get me by, what is a good hex starter wand to use?

First nitro heli so testing the water a bit  :)

I have a wand similar to yours that fits into the rubber cup.  Mine has no o-rings.  Just make sure you have it pressed in all the way before you spin it up and try really hard to not hit the trigger on the starter unless the you have the wand inserted into the starter shaft adapter on the helicopter or else it will fly out, possibly hitting you (multiple times if you're clumsy).  I've been looking for one that replaces the spinner cup and clamps directly to the shaft (and had no OWB) because I'm not real fond of how easy my current one comes out of the rubber cup.

I have a cheap 12V starter, not the Sullivan, and I've been using a 3S battery.  I notice that is seems a lot of people use 4S, though. Mine cranks my 105 no problem with the 3S battery.

Thanks Rodney, already had the shaft fly off in the kitchen!
But tried it on a new Gryphon fuel pump, worked like magic, pumped fuel in circles for a few minutes at a good rate but main point is the shaft was fine as long as it was supported at both ends.
So will have a 3S and 4S on hand, see if I can get away with 3S hopefully.

Hilarious.  I've never done that  :-[

I like the 4S because it turns it with an incredible amount of authority.  The only possible problem there is to make sure your not hydro-locked lest the starter damage the expensive shiny bits inside the engine.
Trying in vain not to anger the gods of vertical flight!

I currently have my battery just strapped on the starter and it's just way too easy to hit the stupid button.  I've lost count of how many times the wand has flown off.  I ordered a battery adapter earlier this week after I did that yet again this weekend, LOL.

One of the things I like about the 3S is that my starter will not turn the engine if it's hydro locked.  That way, I know it's flooded.

I don't know how well it's known so I'll mention it...

The Makita battery mount for the Dynatron is freakin awesome. It's expensive if you don't already have the Makita battery and charger but it's so worth it if you value form just as much as function :)

Starter sorted!

All working, a few hours to knock up a bracket from some aluminium sheet I had.
Started easily on a 3S battery the first session, however second tank it wouldn't go over compression so turned by hand, it was OK and then wouldn't turn over on a 4S battery!  Removed glow plug, closed the fuel supply and spun a few times, definitely not flooded.
Then the blasted cup unscrewed, well they didn't locktite that very well.
At least all working, Spektrum sensor gave crazy readings on my TX so installed an Align sensor, Vbar picks it up no problem.

Does the Hirobo one just fit into the rubber cup, as well?  I can't see the picture here at work, it's blocked by the firewall.

Steviepoo, sorry I did not get back but work is sucking right now.  The one way has slipped.  Put in a little red loctite, install the start shaft, twist it so it engages and pull it up to the threads.

Of course, no issue with the Hirobo.

I'm in Germany so I ordered one locally from world-of-heli.de. Through rcferret.co.uk I found one in stock in the states here: http://www.rchover.com/2513-053-ONEWAY-STARTER-SHAFT-p/3121.htm
