No matter what I do, clutch stack always slips

I've soaked it in denatured alcohol and applied oil to it and now it always slips. It's also making a loud metal-on-metal screeching sound but I can't get it to slip by hand to see where the issue is. I got it to start before... getting pretty frustrated now.

Any tips? Should I order a new clutch?

What kind of starter are you using ? screeching sound.
  The  owb grease has to be brushed off or use air compressor while using alcool. It's possible the grease has not dissolved by just bathing it. It will stick in colder temps.

It's a Dynatron with the Sullivan starter shaft. As far as I can tell it's not the starter thats screaching.

I've actually let it warm up inside my house and then quickly taken it outside with the same results. Is it possible the OWB in the clutch is ruined?

Borrow a friends start shaft to make sure it is not the Sullivan start shaft. I owned a few of these in the past but switched to a Hirobo start shaft.

Ok. I've got a Hirobo shaft on the way. I'll find out on Tuesday if that was the cause of my problems.

Have you checked to see if the hub/fan is turning while starting? That would let you know if the start shaft/owb is causing the problem or if the problem is the hub slipping on the crankshaft.

I'm not sure soaking alone is enough to remove all/most of the grease. There is a lot in there 

I have taken a very thin piece of cloth, cut a piece about 10mmx35mm soaked it in alcohol and then put it inside the one-way. Then using a small wood dowel (any round stock of roughly the right diameter will do) made the piece of cloth go around the one-way (counter clockwise) so the pins rotate and help pick up the grease.

I had to do this about 3 or 4 times to get back a piece of cloth that was not yellow. After that did the same thing with oil.

Look at the one way bearing in the Sullivan wand.  Is the bearing up against the threads or is it lower.  If the one way is not next to the threads then it is slipping and moving around.  If it has move, clean up the area, put in some red Loctite, reinstall the shaft in the housing use to pull the one way bearing back up to the top.

If it appears to be in the correct spot just lock the one way with the wand and push.  It will probably move. 

I had to fix my Sullivan and I thought for sue it was something else.

I've had to fix the Sullivan in the past as well. Mine had a few bearing failures. I have since switched to the Hirobo.

Also, you really do not want to use a fixed start shaft as it is very difficult to get them to run true. A wobbling start shaft will destroy the hex adapter and the bearings in the upper clutch stack. This is why I went with the soft mount Hirobo start shaft.

Also, you really do not want to use a fixed start shaft as it is very difficult to get them to run true. A wobbling start shaft will destroy the hex adapter and the bearings in the upper clutch stack. This is why I went with the soft mount Hirobo start shaft.

Ah ha, good to know. I was actually worried this and emailed Sullivan regarding the wobbling and the fact that I could heard something rattling around behind the OWB but they seemed uninterested in helping me.

If the one way is not next to the threads then it is slipping and moving around.

My OWB is at least an inch or so away from the threads, towards the starter.

So your saying put red loctite between the shaft and OWB to lock it permanently, then pull the OWB with the shaft?

Edit: On second thought I'd bet you mean apply the loctite to the housing so it ends up between the wall and the OWB after you pull it back out next to the threads?

The engine will turn over a few times before something starts to slip and the I see the clutch stop spinning.

This is where the OWB has been since I got it. I should move it up to the threads?

Got impatient, decided to use a drill with a hex bit. The OWB inside the Sullivan shaft is definitely spinning. With the drill it starts right up.

 

It's been a month or two since I bought it, maybe A Main will take it back.
