Squaring Frame - New to me rebuild
« on: March 12, 2014, 08:59:21 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm rebuilding an E7 that I purchased used.  the mainshaft falls through all the bearings cleanly but when I check the squareness of the main frames on a flat surface, well, it isn't.  Neither side is at 90° and the frame rocks because there is a twist.

Practically speaking, what are the implications of the frames not being square?   Im kicking my self for not checking it sooner - I've got the radio and motor in so there is a bit of work to square thing up.

If there is physical damage you should replace the broken items, or you should try loosening all the fasteners on both sides a couple of turns, then with the main shaft in, square it up and tighten the bolts down.

As far as how far in you are (radio and motor mounted), I have never had a known problem get any better over time.

I don't know the extent of the rocking but that's a good place to start.

Make sure if you loosen the Frame Hardware to Square up the frames , remove each screw one at a time and use Fresh Loctite ;)

Wise words.   I know what I need to do...even if I don't want to.  That said, if everything is smooth I'm not sure what impact it would have.

I would think a warped frame puts unnecessary load on the main bearings. The main shaft should slide down more or less under its own weight if everything is square.

The main shaft *will* drop through under its own weight so I don't thing there will be any un-due stress on the main bearings but the sides are not 90degrees to the base.

In thinking about this more, the most direct issue I can see is that the main shaft may not be at right angles to the FBL controller.  This could cause wonky flight characteristics.

It is also possible that this is resulting from something being bent and could affect motor to main or main to tail gear alignments.   If the axis of rotations are not parallel increased wear is likely.
