Main Shaft Play E5 - ? Shim
« on: June 21, 2014, 01:36:24 AM »
I have about .3 to .4mm vertical play in the main shaft as described by others. I know that the top collar is just designed  to keep the top bearing in place.  Should I tighten the top bearing with shaft pulled up - this eliminates the play - but obviously does not fully load the lower bearing. Or do I push the shaft fully down and then tighten the top collar - thus loading the bearing but leaving a little play. Is it worth shimming? If so - what shims?

Also, I needed to lightly sand the delrin spacers to free up resistance in the one way bearing. It still has a slight resistance.  If I hand push the main gear hard it rotates 2 - 3 x.  Is a little resistance normal on the one way bearing in autorotation mode?

Thanks all.

Bob

Hello!

There is an optional shim for the main shaft but I normally just adjust it out with the collar.

As the auto gear. A little resistance on a brand new build is common. As long as you can turn it by hand fairly easily. It should loosen up after a few flights. Just make sure you loctite in the bronze bushings on the owb. Those can cause the owb to bind if they are left loose.

Thanks Chris  :D

In my kit, it looks like they added a few shims to the extra parts bag. If I do shim, where is the best place to add it?
? Pro / con of shim vs collar adjustment.  How important is it to load the lower bearing by pushing down on the shaft and then tightening the collar vs just adjusting out the play with the collar and tolerating a little less load on the bearing?
