Tuning question for the OS55HZR guys....

So I have an OS55HZR in my N5 and it has probably a couple gallons through it.  Overall it starts and runs great but the only thing I am having a bit of issue with is it seems to load up on transition from idle to mid.  The governor is set to kick in at 30% and when it does the motor will sit and chug for like 15 or more seconds than clear out and take off.  Hover has a ton of smoke and WOT is set well.  I am sure the mid-range needs some fine tuning.  Just curious where some of you have ended up with your needle settings on this motor.  My HS needle is a click or to past 1.5 turns (a click or two richer) and my mid is about 1 turn out.

I would set the gov for 50% and lean the mid needle 2-3 clicks and try it. What fuel?

mine does it when its cold. but after the 2nd flight it clears out pretty good when warm. I have my gov set to kick on at 40%.

Yes. Sounds like the mid could use some leaning. Mine runs great on CP30%. On cold days it does take a minute or two to get fully warmed up but not a problem in the summer.

I have noticed that as well.  I did change the Governor to 40% and I will test this Saturday.  Once on the pipe this motor runs very strong!   8)

I say you are still pretty rich on both the mid and high needles.  For comparison (not sure you geographical location I am in Indianapolis), mine mid needle is about 1/2 turn open and my high needle is about 7/8 turn open and I am still a tad on the rich side.  I am also running Cool Power 30%.  I am not suggesting you will get the same needle settings as me, but my 55's have always been slow to get on the gov when too rich.  If you have plenty of smoke, then you have room to lean her out some.  Once the needles are in the general range, the motor should come on the gov and hit the heed speed very quickly.

Thanks Steve, that's the general guideline I am looking for.  I am in Munster, IN (northwest corner) so pretty much the same elevation.  Appreciate the input!

What I find most guys have is a lean hi and rich mid. You shouldn't have to mess with the idle mixture much at all. I have 10+ gallons thru mine and haven't touched it. Get your hi sorted first. Keep the motor loaded to the point of full throttle, big high speed loops work well for this. Then work on the mid.
Mine is 1 3/4 out on the high and 1/4 out on the mid. VERY strong with the sab-1 pipe.

The Pipe is a Funtech....no idea if its worth a damn or not, lol.  Thanks for the info.  My HS needle is very close to your setting and seems good...looks like I need to just keep tuning on that mid (it was at 1.5 turns out when I got it and WAY too rich - I am down to one turn out and will keep going).  I will have it dialed in Saturday for sure.  8)

Thanks guys...got her dialed in today and she is running great!  Ended up close to the settings mentioned by P johnston.  The trabsition is right now, it has good smoke and a lot more power than the last time I flew it, hehe.

On a side note, I know I have an older N5 but I have to say....what a great flying helicopter!  It feels very locked in and inspires confidence which is a good thing because I am a newbie Heli pilot.  I use my raptor 50 V2 for the first couple flights to get the nerves out and because I have no real attachment to it, lol.  That things flies like a steaming turd compared to the N5  ;D  Very happy!
