E5s flight times and motor kv
« on: January 27, 2015, 10:23:51 AM »
So I've been in a little dilemma since last fall.  I stretched my E5 and went with 626 Rails on the mains.  I was running my E5 for 6.5 minutes on 6c 4400 and 4500 packs, and were coming down right at 80% or just above.  Since I have stretched, I set my timer to 5 minutes, as well a lot of my flying was for tuning and setup of my Ikon.  The last few flights of the year, I noticed I was way over the 80% mark, one even pushing the 95% mark.  I'm trying to recall, but I'm pretty sure that was 1900 head speed. I'm running a Scorpion 4025-1100kv motor. I've done some reading and found someone running a 4025-890kv with 7s lipos getting 6 minutes or just above 6 minutes.

So that brings me to where I'm at.  I want to get more flight time out of this model.  I love the way it flys with 626s, as it feels more like my E7SE.  I've thought about trying the 890kv motor and getting a couple lipos, or should I go to a 12s setup (which looks like everyone is out of Pulse 12s 3000 packs).  How does motor kv affect flight time......or maybe it doesn't.  I'd like to find out more and not try something and be disappointed and have money tied up in something that isn't going to do what I want it to do.

Thoughts?

i would definitely go 12S with the 626mm blades. try the Spyder 3300ma 12S packs. (ProgressiveRC).

i fly mine on 3300ma 6S packs. i have TP and Pulse. i fly mostly Spyder in my E7SE, and will continue to only buy Spyders from now on. for the cost vs the reliability, the spyders just cant be beat. they say 30C on them, but that is a TRUE 30C not an inflated 65 or 70C claimed by other brands. several of the pro pilots i have met recently have told me that 45C is really all you need, that there is very little difference if any between 45 and 70C.

as far as KV affecting flight time. that is all down to the gearing. gear it properly for the best efficiency and your target HS, and you will get good flight times. What ESC are  you running?

i wouldnt do the 7S packs just to keep 7S packs out of my line up, unless your running 14S on your E7SE obviously. 7S packs are more expensive, and could possibly require a larger charger if you only have a PL6 or something that will only handle 6S and below.

What are you getting for flight time on your setup Mike?

As for charging, I have 2  4010 duos on a 2kW Meanwell 48V power supply, so I'll have plenty of power and ports to charge just about everything.  I didn't know Progressive sold bigger batteries, I'll have to keep that in mind for when I pull the trigger on what I should do.

i get 4:30 hard flight out of mine with 626mm blades.

i come down with about 40% left (according to my reader anyway...). i dont like to push my packs all the way, they cost so much, i baby the crap out of them.

about the charger. even with a PL6, with 1344watts of power, if the charger itself isnt designed to charge 7S, it wont. that is what i meant. you would need a PL8 to charge a 7S pack if thats what you wanted. now to be clear, i have only ever used a PL8, so i have no idea what your charger is capable of charging. i was just pointing out that some chargers cannot charge 7S packs. see what i mean?

ok, so that ESC will carry 12S then. that is definitely what i would do if i were you. the power is just so much better with the 12S setup.....well worth it IMO. and everything runs so much cooler. the E5 with 556mm blades is the largest heli i will fly on 6S anymore....

i am flying this motor ( http://www.kdedirect.com/collections/xf-brushless-motors/products/kde600xf-530-g3 ) its a KDE. they also seem to give me more flight time than any other motor i have tried to date. they seem to be more efficient, and they also seem to be much much smoother.

With 626mm blades? Or 556?

I fly my 626mm blades at 1900, 2100, and 2300hs. I love it at 2300, its crazy quick!

I was considering putting a 560 on 10s, which pinion are you using?
