tail control rod too long?
« on: November 20, 2011, 02:19:41 AM »
Hi All,

I'm having problem with installing the tail control rod for my E6. With the tail servo arm at centre and the tail bell crank at 90' the tail control rod is about 15mm longer. I've checked the belt as I thought it was too short and twisted twice; it was not.

The length of my carbon control rod is around 690mm, with ball links is around 735mm. I've also attached some pics for reference.

Has anyone encountered the same problem? Did I do something wrong? I'm completely baffled :( .  And one last thing - how did you guys install the tail output shaft? see mine in the picture.

Here's the tail bell crank:

I had to cut mine down from 695 to 688mm.

My E6 tail rod was also too long...just trimmed it down.  Of course, its best to do this before the ends are glued in!

If he was using the E7 tail rod it would be almost 2 inches too long.

Not sure about the length of your push rod. Something seems strange.

Your tail output shaft is not sticking out far enough. You should have about 4-5mm sticking out of the bearing. Basically it should be as far as it can go.

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks guys for the response. will try to flip the tail servo first so the wheel gets further inside the frames as I can't and don't want to cut the tail control rod at this stage.

@Matt: how did you install your tail servo for E6? is it the same as the manual (with the output shaft towards the rear) or the other way around with the wheel further inside the frames?

Hi Panz - I can confirm on my E7 with a bls251 tail servo that I have the servo mounted as per the manual with the output shaft (and servo wire) towards the rear (same as your setup) and the control rod fits fine and does not need resizing (or flipping the servo).  Looks like it may only be a probloem with the E6 rod.

Cheers

Thanks Gary, I must admit I also used your E7 pictures as  reference when setting mine up  ;), hopefully it can be fixed by flipping the servo

All of my tail servos are BLS251/BLS256 and installed per the manual.

Thanks,

Matt

I had the same problem with a Futaba S9256. I just installed the servo with the gear forward and adjusted the rod accordingly. The rod still had enough thread engagement on bot the ball link and the carbon fiber rod on both sides. I did however install them with 5 minute epoxy/JB Weld and once I had the tail setup complete I put heat shrink on that covers all three (ball link shaft, metal turnbuckle and carbon fiber control rod) just to be on the safe side even though it should not fail from torque. Hope this helped you out.
